New York state grapplers are going to be seeing a whole lot more of Jose Rodriguez in the years to come.
In 2011-12 the Wantagh 99-pound wrestler as just a freshman made quite the impact on the Long Island wrestling scene by dominating the area without losing a single match in Nassau and Suffolk.
Rodriguez compiled an impressive 44-0 record en route to a championship match appearance in the New York State Division I wrestling finals in Albany, NY. Twenty-three of his 44 wins came via pinfall, and eight of them via techincal fall.
His run came to end however in the finals in a 6-3 loss to top-ranked defending champion, Kyle Kelly of Chenango Forks.
A championship appearance as just a freshman is more than enough for Wantagh's Jose Rodriguez to be named one of MSGVarsity.com's Top 30 Long Island players to watch in the 2012-13 school year.
Rodriguez was also part of the Nassau County dual meet championship Wantagh team which defeated rival Long Beach in dominating fashion, 42-18. Rodriguez topped Steven Sewukumar in his 99-pound match in a 3-1 decision.
