Emily Jones was jonesing for a second chance.

She got just that during No. 11 Sachem North's 2-1 win over No. 14 Connetquot in the Suffolk girls soccer Class AA quarterfinals Wednesday, in which she said she felt "every emotion you can possibly imagine."

From disappointment: With the game tied at 1 and 8:30 remaining, Jones got free down the middle of the field for a breakaway but keeper Alix Lopez made a beautiful full extension kick save, trapping the ball beneath her left leg.

"I wanted to break down and cry," Jones said. "I wanted to walk off the field."

To redemption: After being denied a potential game-winning goal, Jones figured her opportunity had come and gone.

"You don't get another chance like that," Jones said. "But somehow I did."

To shock: A throw in by Stephanie Morini landed right in front of the net, where a scramble ensued before Jones managed to get in front of the defender and angle a shot inside the far post for the winning goal with 1:01 remaining.

"I still can't believe it actually happened," Jones said. "It feels amazing."

Sachem North took a 1-0 lead with 1:20 left in the half after Melissa Michels eluded a sliding Lopez and made a cross to Leanna Curcio, who tapped the ball into the empty net.

Connetquot's JoJo Murino scored from about 60 yards out on a free kick to tie the score at 1 early in the second half. Murino drove the ball inside the box as Jess Cordano screened keeper Erin McNulty, who said she thought offsides had been called. The ball took one bounce and rolled into the net. That was the only ball Connetquot (9-8), playing without leading scorer Dawn Hickey, got past McNulty, who had seven saves.

"It's heartbreaking," Murino said of the loss.

Sachem North (11-4-1) advances to play at No. 2 Northport in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"If we keep coming up big," McNulty said, "we can really go far with the heart we have."
