Conroy provides spark for Bishop Ford

Bishop Ford has its share of Division I talent, but on Friday night junior Jill Conroy was the one to provide the much-needed spark.
The 5-foot-5 guard earned MVP honors, scoring 10 points to help lead the Lady Falcons to a 47-34 win against Norland (Fla.) in the Rose Classic Super Jam at Bishop Ford.
“It’s my role to be the sparkplug and it’s a good role to have,” Conroy said. “I’m able to help my team out a lot.”
Aaliyah Lewis scored 11 points, Shanice Vaughan added nine and Brittany Martin added six points, five rebounds and five blocks. But it was Conroy’s huge third quarter that ignited a 14-3 run to help put Bishop Ford in front, 37-25.
“We wanted to come out strong in the third quarter and we did,” Conroy said. “This game will help us get back on track and be more focused now.”
Added Bishop Ford assistant coach Scott Wasserfall: “One of the main reasons she comes off the bench is to provide an instant spark. We insert her in and we go on a run. She’s very smart and is always in the right place.”
Wasserfall was filling in for head coach Mike Toro, who is recovering from suffering a panic attack last week. Bishop Ford (10-1), ranked No. 2 in New York City by MSG Varsity, came out sluggish Friday night, but finished the game strong and Vaughan is hoping that carries over to Sunday’s clash with Archbishop Wood (Mass.) in Day 3 of the Rose Classic Super Jam Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
“It felt great to win today,” Vaughan said. “We’ve really been feeling the loss of our coach, but we were able to pull through it and win the game.”
McKee/Staten Island Tech 66, Lincoln 53:
Kaitlyn Astel had a game-high 27 points for MSIT (14-1), while Simonemmer Roberts had 17 points and Shaquella Figueroa added 16 for Lincoln (7-6).
