Livecast primer: Boys & Girls vs. St. Raymond
ALBANY – The unofficial city championship will be played at the Times Union Center Saturday afternoon when CHSAA champion St. Raymond faces PSAL winner Boys & girls in the New York State Federation Class AA semifinals live on MSGVarsity.com at 3:45 p.m.
The winner of the showdown meets Mount Vernon in the Class AA title game Sunday at 2 p.m., also live on MSGVarsity.com.
St. Raymond (21-9), ranked No. 1 in New York City by MSG Varsity, has been idle since winning its seventh CHSAA title on March 11 when the Ravens beat Holy Cross, 66-58, at Fordham’s Rose Hill Gym. The Ravens also have two Federation titles (1993, 2001).
No. 2 Boys & Girls (24-6) last played a week ago, beating Thomas Jefferson to win a third consecutive PSAL Class AA title at Madison Square Garden.
The teams met once in the regular season with St. Ray’s pulling out a dramatic 78-77 victory at the Ravens Nest on Feb. 16. Myron Hickman, who missed more than a month because of a bacterial infection, had the winning layup at the buzzer for St. Raymond, which enters Saturday’s game on an eight-game winning streak.
The Ravens are a senior-laden squad, guided by Temple-bound Daniel Dingle, who averages 18.5 points per game, and Iowa State signee Kerwin Okoro, who averages 14 points per game.
St. Ray’s has also had a solid contribution from junior guard Shane Rector as well as seniors Hickman and Larry Graves.
Leroy (Truck) Fludd, the lone constant on all three Boys & Girls city championship squads, has paced the Kangaroos this year. The unsigned 6-foot-5 senior averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds per game. In the PSAL final, though, the day belonged to Rashad Andrews, a 6-foot-4 transfer from St. Anthony’s (NJ) who earned MVP honors by scoring a game-high 26 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from 3-point range.
Bishop Loughlin transfers Tyliek Kimbrough and Joel Angus have also been solid contributors for Boys & Girls, which is seeking its first-ever Federation title.
