Memorable Mondays: Top five seniors
Welcome to MSGVarsity.com’s Memorable Mondays, a summer-long series that looks back on the top players, games and moments from the past season and gazes ahead to 2012-13. As the summer goes on, we’ll compile all the lists and post them here: www.msgvarsity.com/mondays. New Lists will be posted every Monday at noon.
In Week 1 of Memorable Mondays, we look at five of the best graduating seniors from New York City high schools.
Kenny Coughlin, Tottenville: The city’s definitive two-sport star, Coughlin was a standout on both the football and lacrosse fields, earning all-city honors in both sports. He was a linebacker for the Tottenville football team that reached the PSAL semifinals and an attack for the lacrosse team that won the city title. He’ll try to play both sports at Hobart and William Smith Colleges next year.
Kareem Folkes, Lincoln: One of the few returning starters from a Lincoln football team that lost in the PSAL final a year ago, the C.W. Post-bound running back is the biggest reason why the Railsplitters finished the year as undefeated champions. He rushed for 1,756 yards and a PSAL-best 28 touchdowns and came up with a pair of championship-clinching pass deflections at Yankee Stadium despite a high ankle sprain.
Leroy Fludd, Boys & Girls: Kangaroos coach Ruth Lovelace proclaimed early in the basketball season that Fludd was the best player in the city and the muscular 6-foot-5 swingman known as “Truck” proved his coach right. He improved exponentially throughout the season, averaging 21 points and 13.2 rebounds per game, leading Boys & Girls to a third straight PSAL Class AA title and first-ever New York State Federation crown, earning MVP honors in Albany.
Alexis Panisse, Benjamin Cardozo: The long-distance queen of New York City track and field, Panisse won three PSAL Wingate Awards. In the spring, the Tennessee-bound senior captured PSAL city titles in the 800m and the 3000m and set Mayor’s Cup records in the 800m and 2000m Steeplechase. Indoors, Panisse helped lead Cardozo to the PSAL title in the 4x800 and took first at the state and PSAL city championships in 3000m.
Becky Shtilkind, Leon Goldstein: Before her arrival, Leon Goldstein tennis didn’t have an identity. In large part because of the Stony Brook-bound senior, Goldstein can now call itself a city powerhouse, winning back-to-back PSAL titles and a first-ever Mayor’s Cup, ending St. Francis Prep’s 203-match winning streak. Shtilkind, an MSG Varsity The Magazine cover girl and PSAL Wingate Award winner, capped her remarkable career with her first Mayor’s Cup individual title.
