Luis Santos was an unknown commodity before the start of the basketball season last year. When it was over, the Dominican Republic import was a household name.

At 6-foot-8, 245 pounds, Santos was a polished player as soon as he stepped on the court for St. Raymond’s. Because of his size, Santos dominated in the paint, but he also displayed a skill set of a player college ready.

It didn’t take very long for Division I colleges to take notice as Rutgers, Fordham, Seton Hall, Virginia, Auburn and the University of Massachusetts have all expressed interest in the rising junior.

“Luis Santos has continued to work hard during the off-season, slimming down and bulking up,” St. Raymond coach Jorge Lopez said. “He has continued to work on his post moves and I think you will see a more dominant player in Santos this upcoming season. He can potentially be the best big man in the city.”

In an overtime win at Archbishop Molloy in December, Santos scored a team-high 27 points and grabbed 13 boards before fouling out with 3:10 left in overtime.

“He’s settling down,” Lopez said after the game. “Early on he was relying so much on his physicality to score. Now he’s understanding he has to slow himself down and just implement and utilize his post moves to score. He’s been doing a much better job of that.”

Santos continued to do a good job of that throughout the season, including scoring 19 points to help spark a come-from-behind win at Cardinal Hayes en route to earning second team All-CHSAA honors.
