Preston inducts 27 into National English Honor Society

The induction ceremony for the National English Honor Society was held on January 18th. The event acknowledged students for their hard work.

Two seniors, sixteen juniors, and nine sophomores were added into the Sr. Mary Ellen Bernard, RDC Chapter of NEHS.

The program began with an introduction by NEHS President Elizabeth Roche, followed by an opening prayer, opening remarks, an explanation of the NEHS motto and colors, the significance of pins, and guest speaker, Dr. Vellani. Subsequent to Dr. Vellani’s speech, discussing topics such as the importance of defining terms that used today, was the induction of the new members. After the new inductees recited the NEHS pledge, the ceremony ended with remarks from Mrs. Grendell and Ms. Forlini.

To be considered for membership, students must have an overall average of 87 and an average of 89 in their English class. Members are expected to meet these expectations academically, but leadership and service are also looked at as important aspects of NEHS. Members must also be willing to share their respect and appreciation of literature, writing, and language, and share this attitude to the rest of the Preston student body.

NEHS is also involved in many activities during the school year, but most active during the springtime. Recently, NEHS has held a movie afternoon showing “The Help” and served some snacks to those who attended. The money raised from the movie afternoon was donated to a literacy organization called Reading Is Fundamental. Another movie afternoon is hoped to be planned soon. An NEHS book drive also occurred, which accepted any genre of books as long as the books were in good condition. These books were donated to the New York City Department of Homeless Services.

NEHS is also planning for their annual celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday on April 23rd, involving Shakespeare inspired music and Shakespearean insults. In addition, on May 16th, the NEHS poetry café will be held on the porch. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite poems and read them to those who attend.

Along with NEHS, Preston also has the National Honor Society, the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society), and the Societá Onoraria Italica (Italian Honor Society). NHS, SHS, and IHS all held their induction ceremonies on Monday, March 26th in the Preston gymnasium.
