NYC girls basketball power rankings (12/13/11)

No. 1 Nazareth (1-0)

Led by Sadie Edwards, Brianna Butler and Bianca Cuevas, the Lady Kingsmen finally stepped on the court Monday and defeated Mary Louis by 19. Still, coach Apache Paschall said there’s a lot of work to be done.

No. 2 South Shore (5-1)

The Vikings defeated Murry Bergtraum, 48-41, Friday, ending the game on an 8-0 run after the Lady Blazers temporarily took the lead.

No. 3 Bishop Ford (3-1)

The Lady Falcons opened their league season with a statement win against Christ the King. They could do the same Wednesday at Mary Louis.

No. 4 Bishop Loughlin (2-0)

The Lions turned heads with upset wins against Murry Bergtraum and Mary Louis. Now, the ultimate test is on the horizon when Ayanna Ratliff and her Loughlin teammates head to Nazareth Wednesday.

No. 5 Mary Louis (1-3)

The Hilltoppers shot themselves in the foot with 23 missed free throws in an 82-63 loss at Nazareth Monday. Now, 0-2 in the league, Reana Mohamed and company has a near must-win on their hands against No. 3 Bishop Ford

No. 6 Christ the King (0-2)

Take away that first quarter and Christ the King played Archbishop Carroll from Philadelphia to a tie game. That’s what the Royals are taking with them to the Nike Tournament of Champions.

No. 7 Moore Catholic (2-0)

Jamie O’Hare scored 18 points and Dina Motrechuk added 12 for the Mavericks in a 57-36 win against Notre Dame Academy Sunday.

No. 8 Archbishop Molloy (4-0)

The Stanners are off to a great start under new coach Scott Lagas, but face a pair of stiff challenges this weekend. First up is No. 4 Bishop Loughlin followed by Ossining, led by star Saniya Chong.

No. 9 John F. Kennedy (6-3)

The Lady Knights rebounded from a difficult loss to Long Island Lutheran to defeat Brooklyn Collegiate, 59-22, Monday as Amely Del Rosario led all scorers with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 10 Murry Bergtraum (3-3)

Shequana Harris nearly willed the Lady Blazers to a big road win against South Shore, but her young and inexperienced team couldn’t close the deal. Once Bergtraum learns to finish games, look out.

No. 11 Cardinal Spellman (2-0)

Sophomore Maria Bachman went off for 26 points, Onia Webb had 14 and Vanessa Stephens added 12 in a 10-point win against St. John Villa Saturday in The Bronx.

No. 12 Benjamin Banneker (4-1)

Africa Williams continues to put up ridiculous offensive numbers, scoring 30 points Monday. The only problem was that it came in a 51-46 home loss against Francis Lewis.

No. 13 Truman (5-2)

Krystal Pearson had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Daquana Smith added 12 points and 18 boards for the Lady Mustangs in a 62-42 win against Manhattan Center last Wednesday, setting the stage for the Battle of the Bronx at JFK.

No. 14 Francis Lewis (3-2)

After stumbling out of the gate, the Patriots have won back-to-back games, including an impressive 51-46 win at No. 12 Banneker Monday. Tyese Purvis had 21 points and Jasmine Davis added 15 for Lewis, which hosts No. 2 South Shore Friday and then takes on Long Island powerhouse St. John the Baptist Sunday in the Francis Lewis Winter Ball.

No. 15 St. John Villa (1-2)

Villa was no match for Cardinal Spellman’s size in a 67-57 loss at Cardinal Spellman Saturday. Now the Bears look to bounce back against St. Joseph Hill Tuesday night.
