They may not have been thinking about it coming into the season, but the St. John's Prep girls soccer team wrapped up a tremendous year with the biggest win in school history at Aviator Sports Complex Thursday night, beating St. Edmund's Prep, 3-1, to capture the Brooklyn/Queens Class A girls soccer title.

"We honestly had no idea what to expect coming into this season," said fifth-year coach Doug Raba. "Shortly after our first game against St. Edmund's, we realized that we had a shot at it because they were really the toughest competition we encountered all season."

Following an impressive opening few minutes that saw some dazzling shots on goal from senior Caroline Souza, the Red Storm got on the board in the 24th minute on Effie Mellidese's third goal of the season, a laser strike through three defenders.

The Red Storm rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to score four unanswered second half goals in the first regular-season meeting against St. Edmund Prep (6-4-1). The second match was a draw.

"Our success against them in our first game and then our tie in the second game led us to think that we had a definite shot at it," Raba said.

Christina Caruso found the back of the net with assists from Christine Emigholz and Souza in the 42nd minute to give St. John's Prep (8-2-1) a 2-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, St. Edmund's freshman Maura Bellane put in the first goal of her career and her team's only score of the game with a floater from the top of the 18-yard box box that just cleared the bar in the 50th minute.

The nail in the coffin came from Emigholz off an assist from Caruso in the 64th minute, securing the win.

"It's a tremendous win for us," Raba added. "For a couple years we had rough seasons, so to come back and have this level of success is great for our confidence and our team."
