Cardozo repeated as PSAL Class A girls volleyball champions, defeating rival Francis Lewis, 25-17, 25-13 in a dominant performance Monday night at Hunter College.
The Judges had beaten the Patriots twice during the regular season and beat their Queens rivals for the first time in the postseason thanks largely to the play of senior Ashley Grubler, who was the X-factor throughout.
Minutes into the first set, Grubler set the tone for her team not only with her play, but with her positive attitude as well. The Judges leader with a never-ending motor had 10 kills, two aces, two digs, and one block as the Judges took the first set, 25-17.
By the second, second-seeded Cardozo (14-0) did all the little things necessary to win. No. 4 Francis Lewis (11-4) ended the day with 18 errors, many of which came in the second set.
Grubler finished with 18 kills, five digs, two aces, and two blocks as the Judges took the second set, 25-13. The senior put her stamp on this game assuring herself and her team a sweet send-off to end the season.
