The Fordham Prep Rams claimed their first CHSFL Class AA championship victory on Saturday in exciting fashion, beating Kellenberg, 22-21, at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

The Rams trailed 21-14 heading into the final drive, when Fordham Prep used a target that they were riding on all day. That target was junior running back Logan Williamson.

With only 18 seconds remaining, quarterback Jimmy McHale hit Williamson for his third touchdown of the game. Now came the hard part for Rams coach Peter Gorynski: Kick the extra point for the tie or go for the two-point conversion where you could be the hero or the goat. Gorynski went bold, putting his offense back on the field and they executed a bit of a surprise.

With Williamson in the backfield, he took the pitch, looked to throw and his halfback pass was completed to a sliding Jarred Moorer wide-open into the end zone giving the Rams the 22-21 lead.

Quarterback Matt McDaniels took the first play from scrimmage 80 yards down the Fordham Prep sideline to give Kellenberg (4-7) an early 7-0 lead. The Rams responded at the end of the first quarter as Williamson went in for his first TD of the game from four yards out.

In the second quarter, McDaniels and Williamson traded touchdowns, McDaniels had a 57-yard touchdown scamper and Williamson went untouched from the goal line. So heading into halftime the score was knotted at 14. A key stat from the first half was the rushing yard totals, an astounding 470 total rushing yards from both teams gave new meaning to ground and pound.

The score remained 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter when Fordham Prep (6-5) went for a field goal at the Kellenberg 16. The 33-yard attempt would be no good from Steven Broccoli, so the Firebirds would gain control of the ball. The first play of the drive, McDaniels got loose again, he went from his own 16 to Fordham Prep’s 16-yard line. McDaniels finished what he started again as he made his way in for a 12-yard touchdown run and give his team a 21-14 lead.

That lead would look like it would hold up as the Kellenberg defense thwarted the Fordham Prep offensive with outstanding plays, especially that of Chris Alianakian. However, the Rams would not be stopped in their final drive as they took home the CHSFL Class AA championship.
