Despite Katie Poppe's 16 points, Holy Trinity fell to Francis Lewis, 52-41, Sunday in non-league girls basketball at the JFK Challenge in the Bronx.
Poppe shot 5-for-19, including 0-for-10 from three-point range.
"Katie's the type of person who can miss three and then make three," Holy Trinity coach John Scalfaro said. "So you're not going to tell her not to shoot. What you're going to say is 'keep going, keep shooting.' "
The Titans got off to a slow start and trailed Francis Lewis 13-5 after the first quarter. Poppe hit her first field goal with 3:27 remaining in the first half to make the score 20-12.
Unable to get into a rhythm offensively, Holy Trinity moved Poppe inside during the first half to try to generate an inside threat against the Francis Lewis 2-3 zone.
"We just never seemed to get going," Scalfaro said. "We rely a lot on our defense and . . . we couldn't create easy baskets."
Poppe proved most effective when she drove to the basket and drew contact. Alyson Brennan added 12 points for Holy Trinity (13-5).
Jasmine Davis had 17 points and Jazmine Hamlet added 16 for Francis Lewis (10-8), which never trailed.
"It's a learning experience," Scalfaro said. "What are we going to do when Katie's not shooting good? Who's going to step up and who's going to do the extra 10 [points] for us?"
