Some of the top teams from New York State and Long Island meet up on the hardwood as MSGVarsity.com Livecast presents a special double-header presentation of the Upstate/Downstate Challenge from Uniondale HS starting at 6:00 p.m.
Our presentation gets underway as last year’s Nassau County Class AA finalists Baldwin take on Mount St. Michael from New York City.
The Bruins of Baldwin High School are looking to improve on what was an impressive 2010 season in which they finished 15-4 overall, only to fall to eventual champs Elmont in last years final, 32-29.
They are led by MSG Varsity: The Magainze’s cover-boy, senior Kyle Richardson, who capped off last year average 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game while earning All-County honors.
They’ll be taking on 2010’s CHSAA Class “A” NYC champion, Mount St. Michael. With the title win, the Mountaineers graduated to the CHSAA “AA” league and although they have not yet played in a league game, they are off to a fast start.
With three returning starts, including guards Malik Gill and Anthony Maestre, Mount is coming off two strong 30-plus point wins over both Long Island’s Hempstead and Evander Childs.
Immediately following the Bruins and the Mountaineers, day one of the Upstate/Downstate Challenge will conclude as the host Uniondale Knights will meet with the Middie Bears of Middletown HS.
Uniondale, is coming off a season-opening, 59-42 win over Bay Shore. Romario Williams led all players on the court with 12 points, while Solomon Graham-Wright added 10 points. The Knights roster is loaded with underclassmen (nine juniors, one freshman, and one sophomore) which poses as a positive sign for the future years.
The Middie Bears will open their season on Saturday against the Knights and are led by Quinnipiac-bound Kendrick Ray. Ray carries on a basketball family tradition -- his older brother Allan has played for Villanova and the Boston Celtics; while his sister Brittany has played for Rutgers and currently plays professionally in Belgium
