  Connecticut New Canaan skates past Greenwich ARTICLE: By Matthew Doran | Dec 21, 2012 It took four games to get it done, but the New Canaan ice hockey team finally woke up its dormant offense. The Rams also took care of another important order of business, picking up their first win of the season. After managing just two goals over the first three games, including a 0-0 tie against arch-rival Darien on Wednesday, New Canaan exploded for four goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Greenwich in a rare morning skate Saturday at Hamill Rink in Greenwich. Senior forward Ben Patch scored the first two goals of the game, both on rebounds of shots by sophomore linemate Davis Bruch, to give the Rams a 2-0 lead after the first period. Senior Harry Stanton extended the lead to 3-0 in the second period with a short-handed goal while Greenwich was on a 5-on-3 power play. Senior goalie Chris Koennecke (21 saves), senior defenseman Stephen Mettler and the Rams took care of the rest, holding Greenwich off over the final two periods after the young Cardinals turned up their intensity. New Canaan, which opened the season with consecutive losses against NDWH and Hamden, are now 1-2-1 overall. “Over the first two games we had a lot of trouble getting the puck in the right spots, but this time we had a lot of shots,” said Patch, whose team out-shot Greenwich 28-24. “It definitely worked out much better today.” New Canaan head coach Bo Hickey was anticipating a slow start to the season with just three seniors playing major roles; Stanton, Puck Richardson and Koennecke. After struggling to put the puck in the net early on, Hickey was happy to see a team that was hungry to score goals. “Of the players who dressed, only two take shifts, and two of them are on the same line,” Hickey said. “I’m playing basically with a bunch of sophomores and a couple juniors. The good thing is we get better every time we play. They work hard. They just need a little direction.” Greenwich (2-2) played hard over the final two periods, matching New Canaan with two goals, including the only tally of the third period on a power-play goal by junior Matt Lodato. The Cardinals, a young team themselves, never let the short-handed goal stop them from fighting. It just took too long for Greenwich to get things going. “That was a big letdown,” Greenwich head coach Bob Russel said. “But it is what it is at that point. You have to try to correct the mistake and not let it happen in the future. Hopefully your team won’t stop working after that. And I thought our best period was the third period. That was a very positive thing to take away from the game after both of the goals we gave up in the second period I thought were soft.” Patch scored his first goal at 5:20 of the first period, tucking a rebound past Greenwich goalie Bryan Archino (24 saves) inside the left post after a stop on Bruch coming out of the right corner into the crease. Patch scored on another rebound to make it 2-0 at 11:33 of the first. This time, Patch and Bruch broke free on a 2-on-1. Bruch shot from the left wing and Archino made the save. But the Cardinals failed to mark Patch trailing the play and he jammed the puck past Archino for his second goal of the game, and the season. “I was a little surprised I was able to score another goal on a rebound like that,” Patch said. “But Greenwich didn’t come out very strong compared to the next two periods. They played much harder after that.” At that point, Greenwich had already dug itself a hole it might not have been capable to climb out of. “We played them even and then all of a sudden you’re down 2-0 and it’s an uphill battle from there,” Russel said. “We know when we play good teams like New Canaan we’re going to have to win 1-0 or 2-1. We’re young, and it’s not in our DNA to score a bunch of goals against good teams. Their goalie’s really good, but I was pleased with the way we kept playing.” The back-breaker came with five minutes gone in the second period. Back-to-back penalties gave the Cardinals 52 seconds of 5-on-3 power-play time. But Stanton picked off a pass near his own blue line, dashed up ice on a breakaway and beat Archino with a nice move to make it 3-0. Sophomore Alex Bastone got Greenwich on the board at 6:39 of the second, wrapping in a puck on the right post after sophomore Decker Curran won a battle behind the New Canaan net. The goal came two seconds after a New Canaan penalty expired. Junior John O’Rourke regained New Canaan’s three-goal lead with a wraparound goal at 14:54 of the second with the Rams on a power play.
