FCIAC girls player of the week: Claire Feeney

Greenwich's Claire Feeney has been named MSG Varsity's female FCIAC Athlete of the Week for May 14-May 19 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Feeney had a couple of big games against FCIAC playoff teams last week, as she collected a combined 11 goals and two assists in a regular-season win over Danbury and a tournament quarterfinal victory over Ridgefield. Against Danbury, Feeney scored six goals and dished out one assist as the Cardinals won 15-9. In last Saturday’s FCIAC quarterfinals, Feeney had five goals and one assist as Greenwich scored a 19-6 decision. The Winthrop-bound Feeney, whose four older brothers each won an FCIAC title at Greenwich, has a 290 career points -- including 81 goals and 12 assists this season.

What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Feeney: "I've always wanted to win FCIACs, so to do that and win states as a seniors would be great."

Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Feeney: "Shannon Colligan is an unbelievable players, friend and teammates. Probably 90 percent of my goals have been assisted by Shannon, and it's been a plesaure playing with her for four years. She's be playing soccer at N.C. State, so it will be nice to keep in touch and follow her career."

What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Feeney: "My mom (Karen) is always saying never give up. That's definitely useful on the field, but off it as well."

Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Feeney: "Hope Solo. She has a lot of determination, and that's something I admire."

What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Feeney: "I'm proud of how hard worked for four years. I'm looking forward to going down south for college, and the support that I've gotten from coaches, parents and the community has been unbelievable."
