FCIAC boys player of the week: Ian Word
Ridgefield's Ian Word has been named MSG Varsity's male FCIAC Athlete of the Week for May 21-May 26 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Word earned tournament MVP honors while helping to lead the Tigers to their first FCIAC boys volleyball championship. Ridgefield defeated both Greenwich and Darien in straight sets, 3-0. In the championship match versus Darien last Friday, Word racked up 19 kills, 14 digs and 10 service points. In the semifinals against Greenwich, Word had 12 kills and nine digs. Word plans on playing club volleyball at Quinnipiac next year.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Word: "One of our biggest goals was to win FCIACs so it was a great feeling to do that."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Word: "That would be too tough to answer so I'll say all of them."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Riley: "To try to give 100 percent all the time."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Riley: "Dwyane Wade. He's obviously a great talent, but I also like how modest he is."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Carey: "I would just say succeeding in the classroom as well as on the court."
