New Canaan's Courtney Gallagher has been named MSG Varsity's female FCIAC Athlete of the Week for May 28-June 2 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Gallagher helped the Rams capture their ninth consecutive state championship, as they defeated rival Greenwich 4-3 in the Class L finals at Yale last Friday. Gallagher, a senior, defeated Greenwich ace Jenn Deluca 7-6, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles spot, tying the match at 3-3 before teammate Kate Howard’s win at No. 4 singles ended the contest. Gallagher had previously lost twice to Deluca, who had just two losses this spring. Gallagher, who was 3-1 during the Rams’ run to the state title, will continue her career at Bowdoin College.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Gallagher: "We wanted to win FCIACs and states. States is probably a title bigger, so I think the team went above and beyond."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Gallagher: "Probably my other co-captain Phoebe Wilks. Our friendship has grown and we've become a lot closer by being teammates."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Gallagher: "Play like you have no worry in the world."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Gallagher: "Lance Armstrong because of all that he's overcome. During a tough match, you try to find it within yourself to pull through which is something he really did in all those races."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Gallagher: "Playing the piano is something I love to do, and being recruited and then getting into Bowdoin was very exciting."
