New Canaan junior Olivia Hompe has been named MSG Varsity's female FCIAC Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-25 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Hompe had six goals and one assist en route to MVP honors in New Canaan’s 8-0 win over Greenwich for the FCIAC championship on Saturday. The Rams had a 2-0 lead in the first period when Hompe went on a six-goal run to become the state's all-time leading scorer with 269 points. The performance gave Hompe nine goals and three assists in two playoff games. She had a hat trick with two assists in the Rams’ 6-1 semifinal win over Darien on Wednesday. In that game, Hompe broke a 1-1 tie in the second period to give New Canaan the lead for good.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Hompe: "To win FCIACs and states in hockey and lacrosse would be really nice."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Hompe: "Madzie Carroll is the anchor of our defense. She's a great player and and we're pretty close."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Hompe: "Last year during the hockey season coach Bulan said you can be nervous, but not scared. That helped."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Hompe: "I'm a big Giants fan, and I think Victor Cruz is really great. That they won the Super Bowl is amazing."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Hompe: "I do Model UN, and have won a couple awards. Competing in that is something I really enjoy."
