Hudson Valley Girls Basketball Rankings (1/3/12)
1. Ossining (5-0): The trip to Disney World was, well a happy one for the Pride, who went 3-0. Saniya Chong was sensational as ever, averaging 32 point, 10 assists, 7 steals and 4.7 rebounds in the three games.
2. Irvington (8-0): Brittni Lai had an incredible effort at the Slam Dunk. But the play of Alyssa Di Campli should not go unnoticed. The only new starter to the team continued to settle into her role and was a vital part of the Bulldogs’ success getting out in transition.
3. Pearl River (6-0): The Pirates got some rest after powering through their bracket at the Slam Dunk and earning coach Lorraine Moylan her 500 th career victory. They shouldn’t have trouble getting to 9-0 before back-to-back showdowns with Tappan Zee and Albertus Magnus.
4. Albertus Magnus (4-0): The Falcons took home their tournament title last week, knocking off Notre Dame Utica in the final behind a jaw-dropping performance by Maeve Parahus. She had 35 points and six rebounds in the victory.
5. Tappan Zee (8-0): Like the boys, the TZ girls went into the break unbeaten and worthy of some rest. The Dutchmen closed it out with a convincing win over Peekskill will face their biggest test on Friday when they host Albertus Magnus.
6. Arlington (7-1): Despite the loss to Pearl River in the Slam Dunk final, Arlington proved it could seriously make a run at a return trip to the County Center in March. They have good balance in their scoring and depth, and are one of the better interior defensive teams in Class AA.
7. Somers (7-0): The Tuskers will go overlooked no more. After not sniffing the top 10 so far this year, they’re introduced after a 14-point win over Peekskill. Somers’ defensive is allowed just 33.6 points per game with nobody going over 44.
8. Monroe-Woodbury (4-0): The Crusaders are Section 9’s best defensive team and, at this point, the best overall, as well. Kingston had a tough two-game showing at the Slam Dunk. Monroe is firm in their position.
9. Mount Vernon (5-2): It’s unfair to knock Mount Vernon too much considering their two losses are to Pearl River and Irvington, who are firmly at the top of these rankings. The Knights have plenty of room to grow.
10. John Jay-EF (6-1): The Patriots are flying under the radar in many this season — for now. They’ll have their chance to make a statement on Friday when they host rival Arlington.
