FCIAC boys player of the week: Max Rothston
Darien senior Max Rothston has been named MSG Varsity's male FCIAC Athlete of the Week for March 4-March 10 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Rothston made 35 saves as the Blue Wave topped rival New Canaan, 2-1 in overtime, in the first round of the CIAC DI ice hockey tournament last Wednesday. Rothston, a captain, faced 36 shots and allowed the Rams’ only goal on a breakaway late in the second period. He made 15 of his saves in the third period and overtime before Darien won the game at 13:33 of the extra session. Rothston also had 26 saves against 29 shots in Darien’s 3-2 loss to Glastonbury in the State quarterfinals on Saturday. The first-team All-State and All-FCIAC goalie will do a PG year at South Kent next season.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Rothston: "To make the FCIAC finals and state quarterfinals, and then be named first-team All-State and All-FCIAC was an awesome year."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Rothston: "Our two other captains Nick Bruno and Hank Glick, they're great guys to be around."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Rothston: "One of my coaches once said when you come back into the dressing room you should be able to say you left it all out on the ice. That's how I try to play."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Rothston: "One of our goalie coaches (Alex Kremer) moved to Boston midway through the season, but he really helped me develop and gave me things to work on."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Rothston: "It all starts in the classroom, and my grades have really improved over the years."
