Rye Outlasts Sleepy Hollow, 27-6
Jack O’Callaghan scored on a punt return in the second quarter and on a kickoff return in the third to lead Rye to a 27-6 season-opening win over Sleepy Hollow on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnets jumped ahead early. On their second possession, Kevin Turco capped off a 13-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to put Rye up 6-0.
“The offensive line had a great push. I was just trying to find the hole and hit whatever was in my way,” said Turco, who finished with 13 carries for 38 yards and a TD.
Sleepy Hollow’s Dondrey Sharrock returned the kickoff to the 13-yard line. The Horsemen, however, couldn’t put any points on the board and trailed 14-0 at the half.
“(Shorrock) had a good return but we kicked ourselves with penalties and couldn’t put it in,” Sleepy Hollow coach Steve Borys said.
The Horsemen put together a 16-play drive to start the third quarter, taking 10:30 off the clock. L.J. Garrant capped it with a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6.
O’Callahan quickly got things going in Rye's favor again when he returned the kickoff for a touchdown, putting Rye ahead 21-6.
“It felt great knowing that the touchdown they had just scored didn’t mean too much anymore,” said Rye linebacker Joe Simolacaj.
Rye sealed the win with a added another touchdown in the fourth quarter by Michael Collins.
Rye (1-0) will travel to Saunders on Thursday afternoon. Sleepy Hollow (0-1) travels to Harrison.
