Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2011 girls soccer season. The awards were selected by MSG Varsity's staff of reporters and editors:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
BETH COPPOLECCHIA
Somers, Sr., Goalie

Coppolecchia was at her best in the postseason. She posted 13 shutouts in 22 games as the Tuskers reached the Class A state final. Coppolecchia allowed just two goals in six playoff games until the fourth overtime in the state final against South Side.

COACH OF THE YEAR
KIERAN McILVENNY
Arlington

Prior to this year, Arlington was strictly known as a boys soccer powerhouse. In 2011, McIlvenny led the girls program into the spotlight.The former semi-pro Irish soccer player coached the Admirals to their best season in program history. Arlington — which finished at 20-3-1 — advanced to the state tournament for the first time ever. The Admirals, who lost 1 -0 heartbreaker to MacArthur in the Class AA finals, were No. 2 in the final NYSSWA Class AA rankings.

TEAM OF THE YEAR
SOMERS

Somers put together its best season in program history. The Tuskers, who lost a quadruple overtime heartbreaker to South Side in the NYS Class A championship, finished with an overall record of 20-2-1. It marked the deepest postseason run in team history. Somers finished No. 2 in the final NYSSWA Class A rankings.

FIRST TEAM

MELISSA RODRIGUEZ
Somers, Sr., Forward

The electrifying senior notched 22 goals and 14 assists to guide the Tuskers to the Class A state title game, which they lost in four overtimes. She played the second half of the season despite nagging injuries and was part of Section 1’s best attack combination with Melissa Menta.
 
SHANNON PALMER
Arlington, Sr., Forward

If a big goal was needed, Palmer seemed to always be there to score it. The senior, who’ll play at Mississippi State, scored the winning goals in the Section 1 semifinals, finals and in the regional final. Ten of Palmer’s 15 goals were game-winners for an Arlington squad that reached the Class AA state final.
 
MELISSA MENTA
Somers, Sr., Forward

The duo of Menta and Melissa Rodriguez took Section 1 by storm. Menta, a first-team all-state selection, tallied 14 goals and 16 assists while providing some pivotal goals during the Tuskers’ run to the state title game. Her biggest was the winning goal in the Section 1 final in the waning minutes.
 
SARAH SCHUCKER
Nanuet, Sr., Midfield

A four-year varsity starter, Schucker moved from midfield to forward this season and flourished in the new role. She led the section with 34 goals and tallied 11 assists, and finished a remarkable career with 107 points. Schucker will play next fall at Byrant University.
 
SAMANTHA MCGUIRE
John Jay-EF, Sr., Midfield

The state’s co-Player of the Year in Class AA, McGuire finished off a remarkable four-year career. McGuire, who’ll play at Tennessee, had 24 goals and nine assists, leading the Patriots to the Section 1 semifinals. McGuire is a four-time all-state selection who scored 104 career goals and won two state championships.
 
CHARLOTTE MILLER
Scarsdale, Sr., Midfield

The Loyola (Md.)-bound star helped make Scarsdale one of Section 1’s elite teams this season. Miller recorded 22 goals and nine assists despite being the focus of every defense the Raiders faced.
 
MIRANDA TARPEY
Arlington, Sr., Midfield

Regarded as one of the most college-ready players in the Hudson Valley, Tarpey was a defensive-minded midfielder for the Section 1 Class AA champions. She managed eight goals and seven assists while completely dominating the center of the field. Tarpey, a first-team all-state pick, will play at UConn.
 
SHANNON CRAWFORD
Bronxville, Sr., Defense

A two-time first-team all-state selection, Crawford was one of the most skilled and dynamic players in the region the past two years. She guided the Broncos to back-to-back Class C sectional titles, and was a state champion as a junior.
 
BRYNN MOYNIHAN
Pearl River, Sr., Defense

Playing in Rockland County, there are no easy assignments for a defender. But Moynihan answered the call just about every game during her five-year career. She was an all-state selection this fall.
 
KATIE BURRELL
Clarkstown South, Sr., Defense

The Vikings were an explosive team during their breakout season in Section 1. But the strength of the team was really its defense, led by Burrell. The veteran was named second team all-state as South reached the Section 1 Class AA title game.
