Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2012 girls lacrosse season. The awards were selected by MSG Varsity's staff of reporters and editors.

MSG Varsity: Hudson Valley girls lacrosse awards

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Sammy Jo Tracy, Sr., Fox Lane

Sammy Jo Tracy was simply a cut above the rest of the competition in Section 1. The University of North Carolina-bound senior midfielder was always the best player on the field. She carried Fox Lane to a Section 1 Class B title and a berth in the NYS Class B final four. Tracy, who was chosen to compete on the U.S. U19 women’s national team and was also the only player from the WE/HV region to be named an Under Armour All-American, totaled a team-high 116 points (94G, 22A) this year. She finished her illustrious career with 434 total points (327G, 117A).

COACH OF THE YEAR
Dennis Hurlie, Rye

Coach Dennis Hurlie returned to the Rye girls lacrosse program and made an immediate impact, leading the Garnets to their first Section 1 title since 2006. Hurlie was also the coach of the '06 team. The Garnets showed an innate ability to win close games, edging defending Class C champ Pearl River, 12-11, in the semifinals and Byram Hills, 12-11, in the title game. Rye — which also captured a regional title with an 18-5 win over Section 2's Albany Academy — eventually fell to Honeoye Falls-Lima in the state semifinals.

TEAM OF THE YEAR
North Rockland

It was a historic year for the North Rockland girls lacrosse program. The Red Raiders captured their first-ever sectional title, dethroning five-time defending champ Lakeland/Panas in the Class A championship game. They went 19-1-1 overall to set a program record for wins in a season. The Red Raiders also finally solved Rockland County rival Suffern, defeating the Mounties twice during the regular season and then a third time in the sectional semifinals. Heading into the 2012 season, North Rockland had lost 10 straight against Suffern.

All-Hudson Valley: First team

Goalie: Katie Lonergan, Sr., North Rockland — Steady senior netminder anchored the Red Raiders' stingy defense, which relinquished the fewest goals a game (7.71) in Section 1. Lonergan posted a .440 save percentage.

Midfield/defense: Lely DeSimone, Sr., Suffern — UPenn-bound senior was arguably Section 1's most versatile player, possessing the skills and athleticism to make an impact all over the field.

Midfield/defense: Chyna Hill, Sr., Lakeland/Panas — Fresno State-bound senior proved to be a dangerous two-way threat, racking up 25 goals and 17 assists while spearheading the Rebels' defense.

Midfield: Sammy Jo Tracy, Sr., Fox Lane — * Player of the Year *

Midfield: Lauren Murray, Sr., John Jay-CR — Northwestern-bound senior was a consistent offensive threat with a team-high 82 points (59G, 23A). Murray scored five-plus goals five different times in 2012.  

Midfield: Emma Bozek, Sr., Lakeland/Panas — Bozek, who will play field hockey next year at the University of North Carolina, was one of Section 1's most dangerous players in open space. She totaled a team-high 93 points (62G, 31A) to power the Rebels' potent offense.

Midfield: Tara Monaghan, Sr., North Rockland — SUNY Cortland-bound senior set the program record for goals in a season with 82. Monaghan, who missed a lot of last season due to injuries, also registered her 100th goal and graduates as the program's fifth all-time leading scorer.

Attack: Stefanie Ranagan, Sr., Yorktown — Manhattan-bound senior powered the Huskers' offense with a team-high 45 goals and 22 assists. Ranagan also registered the 100th goal of her career.

Attack: Alexa Bonnes, Sr., Lakeland/Panas — UConn-bound scoring machine set the program's all-time record for goals in a game with 11 against Mamaroneck in the Section 1 Class A semifinals. Bonnes, who cracked the 100-goal milestone in 2012, racked up a team-high 65 goals and added 26 assists.

Attack: Abby Baigelman, Sr., Mamaroneck — Gettysburg-bound senior proved to be the ultimate offensive powerhouse, finishing her four-year varsity career with 238 goals and 108 assists. She was also the first player from Mamaroneck to be named an All-American.

About the MSG Varsity All-Stars: The honorees were selected among public and private schools within the MSG Varsity coverage region, which includes Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and parts of Orange County.
