WHTIE PLAINS, N.Y. – Alexander Hamilton completed its preseason goal, defeating Keio 60-23 to win the Section 1 Class C championship. The title is Hamilton’s first in school history in Class C and first overall since they won the Class D championship in 1988.
“We knew that we couldn’t take Keio lightly; we just had to go in there like it was a regular game,” Hamilton star junior Maia Hood said. “It feels great to finally win it. I’ve been waiting for this the last four years. It just feels amazing.”
Hood took home the game’s MVP trophy with a dominating performance. Hood posted 29 points – 23 in the first half – and added 11 rebounds and four steals.
“Maia has been solid her entire career,” Hamilton coach Benjamin Carter said. “She has increased her numbers every year and this year they really went up. She holds our team down. When we put points up it’s because of her. She’s the glue and foundation of what we’ve built our team around.”
Teammates Ayanna Behagan and Jasmine Robinson made the all-tournament team with Behagan posting 12 points, five assists and eight steals in the championship game and Robinson adding seven points, five assists and three steals. Amani Lightbourne had eight points, five rebounds and five steals and Donasia Farmer had five points and five rebounds off the bench.
Sophomore Sae Toyomura also made the all-tournament team, scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds. Marina Kokubo and Mao Takeshita each added five points.
After the game, Hamilton spoke of their second preseason goal; to continue on and win a state championship.
“We’re not done yet,” Behagan said. “We’re going for states now. We have to take it one game at a time and hopefully we can get there and win it all.”
