Two down. And about two dozen more to go.
Poughkeepsie football coach Ken Barger announced Friday that standout seniors Joshua Oliver and Lawrence Featherston have committed to play this fall at Ithaca College.
Oliver, a quarterback, and Featherston, a linebacker, were both first team all-state selections last season for the Pioneers, who captured the Section 1 Class A championship.
The 5-foot-6 Oliver was last season’s MSG Varsity’s Section 1 player of the year, compiling nearly 2,600 yards of offense and 36 touchdowns. He ran for 1,389 yards and 20 scores and passed for 1,186 yards and 14 touchdowns, and had at least 175 yards combined in every single game.
Featherston, a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder, lead the team with 155 tackles with a sack and two fumble recoveries.
Oliver and Featherston are the first two of what Barger projects to be 23-24 Poughkeepsie graduates to move on to college football this fall, or enter the military. The team had 25 seniors.
Barger said one of the biggest factors in Oliver’s and Featherston’s decision was the success that 2011 Poughkeepsie grad Tyre Coleman had last fall at Division III Hobart College.
“That,” Barger said, “and the ability to get the education through football free sealed the deal.”
Barger said the school will wait until after every play makes their college commitments before holding a signing ceremony.
