Austin O’Toole hit a 3-pointer with a minute left in the first overtime to break a 56-56 tie. On the next possession, O’Toole hit two free-throws to seal the 63-58 comeback victory for the Pirates (6-3, 3-2).
O’Toole was held scoreless in the first half, but scored 17 points after the break, inlcuding seven in overtime, to help erase an 11-point halftime deficit. O’Toole’s overtime basket gave Pearl River its first lead since the first quarter.
The Pirates tied the game at 52-52 with a minute left in regulation after pulling to within two to begin the fourth quarter. Both teams each had a possession to win the game in the final minute.
After the first quarter ended all square at 12-12, Spring Valley (4-6, 1-3) scored the first nine points of the second quarter and led by double-digits into the break. Midnet Cantave sparked the run on both ends of the floor and finished with 11 points off the bench before fouling out.
Freshman Ricky McGill led the Tigers with a game-high 18 points, including a buzzer-beating jumper that ended the first half.
Pearl River’s Joe Clinton also had 17 points and Kevin Degnan contributed 13 points despite foul trouble. The sophomore picked up his fourth foul with four minutes remaining in the third then reentered the game with six minutes left in the fourth. Degnan remained on the floor for the duration of the game.
The league-rematch is set for February 2nd at Spring Valley.
