SECTION 1 BOYS GOLF
Section 1 will need new stars to emerge as seven out of nine members of the state team graduated, including Brewster’s Mike Miller and Byram Hills’ Stuart Kaufman. Miller was a four-time state qualifier and finished runner-up last year. He also won the Federation championship three times. Kaufman was a three-time state qualifier – winning the Section 1 tournament in 2009 – and finished in 15th place in last year’s state event.
Here’s a look at what to expect this season in Section 1 golf:
Clarkstown North: The Rams captured the Rockland County championship and then capped off the year by winning the Section 1 title. Clarkstown North was the last team added to the tournament (a fourth team was added in 2010) and made the most of the opportunity.
Clarkstown North: Junior Derrick Kim returns after an impressive 2010. Kim won the Section 1 tournament by five strokes and made his second trip to the state tournament, finishing in 19th place last season (third best amongst Section 1 golfers). An experienced nucleus – junior Bobby Duggan, senior Bruce Rubin and senior Ross Gusler – will complement Kim in the lineup.
Scarsdale: Out of five qualifiers from the Section 1 tournament from last season, only two return. Seniors Maqy Quartner (a three-time qualifiers) and Robbie Smith will anchor a young but promising lineup as the Raiders seek their 11th straight league title. Scarsdale, the top-seeded team in 2010, has reached the team championships the past three years, finishing second the past two seasons and coming in third in 2008.
Clarkstown South: The Vikings lose three out of their top five from last year’s squad, which qualified for the Section 1 team championship. But they do return their top golfer, Devin Solar. Last year as a freshman, Solar qualified for sectionals. Junior Dave Maffeo also returns and will be expected to contribute in a bigger role.
White Plains: The Tigers are young, but experienced and deep. Two sophomores are at the top the rotation. Sean Trainor finished in a tie for 10th place in the Section 1 tournament, one shot shy of forcing a playoff for the final state spot. Tyler Stragg finished in the top 20. In addition to the two sophomores, White Plains expects to have a seventh-grader, an eight-grader and a freshman in the top-six.
Harrison: The Huskies have two returning golfers who finished in the top twenty in the Section 1 tournament: junior Michael DiTrusi (14th), who finished thid in scoring differential in the regular season last year and senior Nate Berman (20th).
Edgemont: The Panthers qualified for the team championship last year, but graduated four of their top five, including two state qualifiers. Zack Pollack returns to lead an almost brand new lineup.
Teams on the rise
Rye: The Garnets were in rebuilding mode the past couple of years after its run of 13 straight league titles. Top golfer Andrew Gladstone enters his fourth year on varsity as a junior after finishing in the Top 30 at the Section 1 tournament in 2010. Gladstone will be complemented by a trio of sophomores, including section qualifier Henry Bailey. Rye is looking for its first Section 1 team title since winning back-to-back in 2007 and 2008.
Suffern: Junior Ryan Miller leads a veteran group that could be a dark horse to challenge for the Rockland County Championship. Miller tied for 17th at the Section 1 tournament and won a Metropolitan PGA junior golf event this past summer at Pelham Country Club.
Tappan Zee: The Dutchmen could be in contention for a Rockland County title behind Matt Josephs, who finished in the top 20 at the Section 1 tournament as a freshman last year.
Other golfers to watch
Anthony Berardo, Ardsley, Jr.: After missing the state tournament by two strokes two years ago, Berardo finished eighth in the Section 1 tournament to qualify for the state team as a sophomore.
Max Christiana, Fox Lane, Sr: Christiana fell one shot short of forcing a playoff in last year’s Section 1 tournament, finishing tied for tenth. He’s a favorite to break through.
Ray Schuttenberg, Briarcliff, Jr.: As a freshman, Schuttenberg just missed the state tournament and followed that up last year with another solid performance in the Section 1 tournament. Schuttenberg has led Briarcliff to two consecutive league championships.
Kyle Sullivan, Albertus Magnus, Sr.: The reigning Rockland County champion will look to follow up a basketball sectional title with a second consecutive trip to the Section 1 tournament.
Nick Dilio, John Jay-East Fishkill, Jr.: A sectional qualifier in 2010, Dilio should be one of the top golfers in Dutchess County.
Francis Kelly, North Rockland, Sr.: Kelly is back after making it to the second day of the Section 1 tournament in 2010.
Section 1 Tournament: First round - May 16 at Sunningdale County Club in Scarsdale; Second round - May 23 at Fenway Golf Club in White Plains.
State Tournament: June 4-6 at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.
June 12 at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Bethpage, Long Island.
The Gaels return four of their top five golfers from a team that won the CHSAA championship last year. It was their seventh CHSAA championship and first since 2005. Iona Prep defeated rival Fordham Prep in the championship, the same team it lost to in the finals the previous two years. Iona Prep will head to Ireland around Easter and play five rounds overseas.
Rich Korzelius, Sr.: Korzelius shot even par on the final day of the CHSAA tournament to lead the Gaels to victory.
Shane Malloy, Sr.: Malloy will compete with Korzelius for the top spot of the rotation, a position they shared last year.
The Crusaders grabbed the last at-large spot in the 2010 CHSAA tournament after finishing third in the Westchester/Bronx division. Stepinac pulled the upset and knocked off the top seed in the first round before falling to Iona Prep in the semifinals.
Playoffs: Begin on May 23

CHSAA State Championship: June 3 at James Baird State Park in Plesant Valley, NY.
