Tyler Sayre has done a lot for the Albertus Magnus boys basketball program the last few years. He's started all three years on varsity, notched countless double-doubles, and even led the Falcons to last year's Section 1 Class B championship.
Now, Sayre's name will go down in the history books.
The senior forward became the school's all-time leading scorer in Albertus Magnus' 81-63 victory over Spring Valley on Monday night. Sayre broke the previous school record of 1,066 points set in 1994 by Antoine Duvert. He now has 1,081 points in just three years of play.
Heading into Monday's matchup against the Tigers, the all-section player needed just nine points. He took care of business in the first quarter, burying 12 of his game-high 24 points to cement himself as an Albertus Magnus legend.
"It definitely was a good feeling," Sayre said. "I knew I was getting close but I wasn't thinking about it too much... I never thought something like this could have happened when I started playing at Albertus three years ago."
Because the game was at Spring Valley, Sayre wasn't honored on the spot. Albertus Magnus coach Pat McFadden said there would be a proper ceremony at the Falcons' next home game against Pearl River on Feb. 8.
"I couldn't be happier for him," McFadden said. "He's a great kid and so low-key. We called timeout and told him he broke the record and he was kind of like, 'OK, what's the next play?' He's a coach's delight and has been gold for us. I'm almost a little spoiled."
Sayre said he was relieved to break the school record, but quickly switched the focus back to the upcoming Section 1 Class B tournament.
"We want to finish the season right — take it one game at a time and build toward that No. 1 seed," Sayre said. "That should set us up to try and repeat as champions."
