SECTION 1 GIRLS LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
at Fox Lane High School
North Rockland 10, Lakeland/Panas 9
The Red Raiders captured their first Section 1 girls lacrosse title in history, holding off the top-seeded and five-time defending champion Rebels in the final seconds.
North Rockland started the game by scoring the first four goals. Lakeland/Panas responded by scoring the next seven. But the Red Raiders controlled play throughout the second half.
Lauren Mazza scored three goals, and Tara Monaghan added two goals and two assists for North Rockland. Kaitlyn Rau and Kelly Dowd also scored twice, and Katie Lonergan made six saves in the win.
Molly Fitzpatrick recorded three goals and three assists, and Emma Bozek had three goals and an assist for the Rebels. Amanda Vasta added two goals.
Fox Lane 11, Brewster 9 (2OT)
Top-seeded Fox Lane captured the title behind a seven-goal performance from University of North Carolina-bound superstar Sammy Jo Tracy. Kailey O'Hagen added three goals, including the game-winner in overtime. Sydney Stern rounded out the offensive production with three assists.
For No. 3-seeded Brewster, Megan Yarusso and Liz Lleshaj netted three goals apiece. The Bears tied with 56 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Rye 12, Byram Hills 11
Scarlett Sulliman had four goals and an assist to lead the Garnets to their first Section 1 championship since 2006.
The teams were tied 6-6 at the half before the Garnets took an 11-8 lead. Emma Brinkman's goal late in regulation put the Garnets ahead 12-10. With 34 seconds to play, Claudia Hammerschmidt (three goals) scored for the Bobcats but they couldn't net the equalizer in the final seconds.
Tori Virtue had three goals in the win. Annie Van Wagenen added two goals and an assist, and Brinkman tallied a pair of goals for fourth-seeded Rye.
Byram Hills, the No. 7 seed, got four goals and an assist from Katie Byrne. Alex Fritz had a goal and four assists and Emma Benzie had two goals.
