Our Lady of Mercy came into St. Dominic’s High School and had to fight for every point they could get as the Lady Mustangs topped the Bayhawks, 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 24-26, 25-22) in a girls volleyball matchup seen on MSGVarsity.com Gametime Livecast.
The Lady Mustangs struck early in Game 1 in what looked to be an even matchup to start. Both teams were even at 14-14 before Our Lady of Mercy took over.
Our Lady of Mercy rode the strength of seven team aces and went on an 11-3 run to take the first game, 25-17.
The Bayhawks came out firing in Game 2, taking a 5-1 lead from the get-go. However, the Lady Mustangs answered the Bayhawks strong start by evening up the score at 10-10. But following four straight points by St. Dominic’s Melissa Guida on the serve to make it 14-10, Our Lady of Mercy would eventually take control on the wave of 11 kills by the Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs would rattle off 14 of the next 15 points and grabbed control of Game 2, winning 25-16.
Game three looked to be the same old story for St. Dominic’s -- stay even through most of the game, and allow a rally to get themselves behind the eight-ball. For most of the game the story, as the Bayhawks were even at 13-13 until falling behind 24-19.
But the pesky Bayhawks wouldn’t quit, and rallied to take game three, 26-24.
“We came out with a whole new attitude and passion,” said Guida. “We all expect each other to give a little here and there, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”
St. Dominic’s new passion and attitude continued through to game four, however it came up just short. Finding themselves in a similar position, down 23-18 in the final game, St. Dominic’s fought back to cut the Mercy lead to 24-22, however a wide set clinched the victory for Our Lady of Mercy, 25-22.
