The road to a New York State girls soccer title begins right here.
No. 2-ranked MacArthur and No. 9 Calhoun will meet on the girls soccer pitch for the Nassau County Class AA championship at Denton Avenue field, live on MSGVarsity.com Game Time Livecast at 4:00 p.m.
Both teams have encountered different path en route to the title matchup.
Second-ranked MacArthur enter its meeting with Calhoun with a 14-2 record, with its only losses coming to top-ranked Farmingdale -- the team which this afternoon’s opponents knocked out of the playoffs earlier in the quarterfinals. The Generals have been stingy in its defensive play and have only given up seven goals all year.
Despite having two more losses than Calhoun, MacArthur as awarded the second-seed in the playoffs, earning a bye in to the quarterfinals. The Generals made short stay of its competition, first shutting out Baldwin easily 6-0. Kristin Alonzo led the way for the Generals with two goals, while four others had a goal apiece.
MacArthur followed it up by dethroning the eight-time defending Nassau Class AA champion, Massapequa, shutting out the Chiefs 3-0. Jill Mulhollan had two goals on the evening and adding an assit, while Jenna Cozza wasn’t tested much and only made three saves for the shutout.
Calhoun has had to put in a little extra work to get to the title game.
Despite having a regular-season undefeated record (12-0-2), the Colts were given the number nine seed in Class AA and were paired in the first round with Hicksville. That was no problem for Michelle Iacono and the Colts as she tallied a hat trick in Calhoun’s 3-1 first-round win.
Calhoun then shocked the Class AA world with an overtime win over top-seeded Farmingdale. Kristina Gandolfo scored the game-winning tally with 9:00 left in the extra frame.
The Colts needed even more extra time to clinch a spot to the championship game as they continued the upset-rally, downing No. 4 Mepham, 2-1 in the Class AA semifinals. Mary Hijazi scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in overtime past goaltender Alexa Rinaudo.
