Akalski scores two as Kellenberg prevails

Christina Akalski seized on an opportunity.

With the scored tied at one goal apiece and just a minute after Sacred Heart's Maggie Cash had a breakaway attempt shot wide with five minutes remaining, Akalski found herself in a very similar position.

The Kellenberg striker get a step on the Spartan defender on a through-ball and had a one-on-one opportunity with Sacred Heart goaltender Kaitlyn Gorman. With the keeper challenging. Akalski, already with a goal on the afternoon. fired a shot over Gorman's head to give Kellenberg a 2-1 lead.

It would be a lead the Firebirds would hold until the final buzzer.

The goal was Akalski's second of the game, her fifth of the season and gave Long Island's seventh-ranked girls soccer team a four game winning streak.

Although it was Kellenberg that posted more goals on the scoreboard, it would be Sacred Heart to be the ones that opened up the scoring.

Sacred Heart scored just six minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Christina Lampasi scored just inside the right post on a free kick from just outside the penalty box to get the Spartans ahead.

The free kick was awarded when a challenging Kellenberg goalkeeper Paige Salmon's hand made contact with the ball outside the box.

Eight minutes later the Firebirds evened things up. Genevieve Fishman sent a through-ball into the Sacred Heart zone which Akalski made her way behind the Spartan defense.

Akalski got to the loose ball before Sacred Heart goaltender Kaitlyn Gorman could challenge successfully and fired a shot past the diving keep to tie the score at 1-1.

The Firebirds had a golden oppotunity to take the lead with three minutes left inthe second half, however Tess Dorilio's one-timer on a cross pass went off the corss bar. The rebound which came right back to her was stopped point-blank by Gorman to keep things equalized.

However things opened up late in the second half beginning with Cash's missed oppotunity, leading up to Akalski's second tally of the game and the game winning goal.
