    Butzke named state's Gatorade POY

    The senior midfielder led the Friars to their second straight state title last season. Despite often being double- or triple-teamed, Butzke scored nine goals and had seven assists. He scored the winning goal in overtime in the state semifinal against St. Joseph's.

    St. Anthony's Giuffrida led way to CHSAA title

    During a practice in early October, after the Friars had dropped games to rivals St. John the Baptist and Chaminade, assistant coach Don Corrao made the announcement: Giuffrida would join seniors T.J. Butzke and Beau Hornberger as captains of a Friars team that was chasing a second straight state championship.

    Commack had something to prove this season

    Commack allowed only three goals in the eight games after tying Ward Melville. The Cougars won each -- including the state championship game, in which they beat Fairport, 2-0. Anthony Izzo scored both goals.

    Coach: State champ was Mattituck's best

    Led by High School All-American and Long Island Player of the Year Kaan Ilgin, Mattituck throttled Skaneateles, 6-0, in the Class B semifinals and scored twice in the second half to put away Beekmantown, 3-0, in the title game. It was a dominant two-day stretch in Middletown.

    The St. Anthony’s boys soccer team captured a second consecutive CHSAA state championship Sunday night, beating Fordham Prep, 4-2, at Adelphi University. And in doing so, longtime head coach Gene Buonaiuto picked up win No. 400 in his illustrious career.

    Southold comes up just short in regional final

    Southold (12-6) made it to a Class C regional final at Diamond in the Pines in Coram on Saturday. The First Settlers will not get any further, however. Hudson Valley-Rhinebeck advanced on penalty kicks, 3-1, and will play Lansing Saturday in a state semifinal at Middletown High School.
