Doubleheader primer: Nassau 'A' boys semifinals

5:00 p.m. – NASSAU CLASS A BOYS BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL: SOUTH SIDE vs. ROSLYN

The Nassau Class A boys basketball playoffs have been difficult to predict. This game is especially surprising that perhaps even the best of prognosticators wouldn’t have had it correct.

No. 8 South Side comes in against No. 12 Roslyn fresh off of knocking off top-seeded Lawrence last Tuesday in a 62-59 quarterfinal victory. Matt Pandolfi (five points) hit a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left to propel the Cyclones over the Tornadoes. Paul Pandolfi scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory.

On the flip side of the coin is the equally if not more surprising Roslyn squad. The Bulldogs topped No. 5 Bethpage in the first round and No. 4 Mineola in the quarterfinals to make it into the semifinals. Roslyn entered the tournament reeling from back-to-back losses to Wantagh and Jericho, but have found their stride through the first two games. In the win at Mineola, Mark Gjonlekaj scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Terrence Pierce scored 16 points to lead Roslyn.

7:30 p.m. – NASSAU CLASS A BOYS BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL: JERICHO vs. VALLEY STREAM SOUTH

In the second game of our doubleheader, second-seeded Jericho meets up with another Nassau ‘A’ surprise team in 12th-seeded Valley Stream South.

Jericho is currently on quite the hot streak winning their last 10 games. So far in the playoffs they have cruised past No. 15 Seaford in the first round and No. 10 Great Neck North in the semifinals. In the victory over the Blazers, Garrett Johnson, Erik Kanzer, and David Orr each went for double-digit points. Johnson was the high scorer with 24 points, while Kanzer and Orr had 20 and 14 respectively for the Jayhawks.

Valley Stream South has been a headache for their opponent all year. However, in the playoffs this is where the Falcons have shined. VS South has left No. 6 West Hempstead and No. 3 Hewlett in their wake to the semifinals. Will Knight had 13 points while Dana King finished with 16 points and seven assists. Diego Madonado went for 16 points and Nnamdi Nwaigwe added 11 points and 11 rebounds to top Hewlett.
