Ferreira earns NYSSWA co-POY accolades
Steven Ferreira can add one more accolade to his already historic high school football career.
Sayville’s star quarterback was named NY Class A football co-player of the year by the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA).
Ferreira set Long Island career marks in 2011 and finished with 6,411 passing yards and 73 touchdowns, smashing previous records set by St. Dominic’s Tony Capozzoli (1972-1975).
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior completed 139 of 216 passes for 2,443 yards with 29 touchdowns in 2011 and led the Golden Flashes to a 12-0 record and a Long Island Class III title in a record-setting 78-61 win over Lawrence. He was named the recipient of the 2011 Boomer Esiason Award as Suffolk County’s most outstanding quarterback for his efforts.
Ferreira was also a runner-up for the Thorp Award, finishing second to co-winners Stacey Bedell and Dalton Crossan.
Ferreira shared honors with Aquinas HS running back Billy Lombardi. The junior Lombardi helped guide Aquinas to its sixth straight Section V Class A title, rushing for 2,146 yards and 26 touchdowns.
