Gibson Award goes to Mount Sinai’s Kessler

Kessler used his high-octane fastball and wipeout slider to keep batters uneasy during a historic season for the Mustangs, who won the Long Island Class A championship for the first time. The big righthander went 8-3 with a 0.39 ERA en route to being named the 2016 Paul Gibson Award winner.

Anthony Catapano wins Nassau’s Diamond Award

After winning the Martone Award in December for Nassau’s best lineman, Catapano can add another trophy to his mantle. Wednesday night he earned the Diamond Award for the top baseball position player in Nassau at the all-star banquet at the Uniondale Marriott after being nominated for the honor last year.

Oceanside’s Martin wins Diamond Pitching Award

After an offseason of strenuous training, Martin capped his high school baseball career with the highest honor in Nassau. In addition to earning a third Conference AA-I MVP, the senior shortstop and pitcher received the Diamond Pitching Award at the county’s all-star banquet Wednesday night at the Uniondale Marriott.

Smithtown’s Grande takes home Silver Slugger

The senior shortstop led Smithtown West to a share of the Suffolk League III title with crosstown neighbor Smithtown East. And he led the Bulls with a .522 batting average, 35 hits, 27 runs scored, 23 RBIs and a .641 on base percentage. He finished his high school career with 111 hits in his five-year career.

Brian Morrell of SWR wins Yastrzemski Award

For his accomplishments, Morrell became only the fourth junior in 49 years to earn the prestigious Carl Yastrzemski Award, given to Suffolk’s top player. The award, which is voted on by the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association, was presented at last night’s All-County banquet. He is the first junior to earn the award since Patchogue-Medford’s Marcus Stroman, who plays for the Toronto Blue Jays, in 2008.

Rooney named MVP as Suffolk wins all-star game

Bay Shore righty Brian Weissert put the finishing touch on a masterpiece. Nine Suffolk pitchers shut out the Nassau senior all-stars, 1-0, Tuesday night at the 12th annual Rawlings Grand Slam Challenge at Farmingdale State College.

The Wildcats exuded pride about their accomplishments in 2016 moments after a season-ending 5-0 loss to Marlboro Central in the Southeast Regional Class B final Saturday at Farmingdale State. A win would have sent Wheatley (21-6) to the state semifinals for the first time since 2013.

Grillo responded in a big way. The lefthander allowed one earned run in seven innings, hit the first homerun of his varsity career, and added a two-run double in the 12th inning to key a four-run rally as Rocky Point outlasted Shoreham-Wading River, 7-3, in a Suffolk Class A playoff game.

Southampton’s Crough wins Div. III 800 championship

The junior kicked with approximately 250 meters left, flying past Garifo and across the finish line in 2 minutes, 0.71 seconds on the first day of the Suffolk boys track and field division championships Monday afternoon at Centereach High School. Garifo was second in 2:01.80.

Northport’s Palmerini shuts down No. 1 Bay Shore

Palmerini allowed six hits and struck out nine in a complete game Friday as No. 8 Northport eliminated host Bay Shore, 5-3. The Tigers (17-6), who went 3-0 and left Bay Shore (20-4) at 2-2 in the double-elimination portion of the tournament, will face fifth-seeded Smithtown West at 4 p.m. Monday in the opener of a best-of-three semifinal series.

Coules hurls Bellmore JFK into the next round

Homers by Fritz, Ippolito lift East Meadow

Zach Fritz and Frank Ippolito homered in No. 3 East Meadow’s 12-1 victory over No. 2 Calhoun in Game 1 of their best-of-three Nassau AA baseball semifinal series Saturday morning. Game 2 will be played at East Meadow at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

SWR’s Zach White blanks Rocky Point

The senior righthander responded with a fabulous three-hit shutout as the Wildcats downed Rocky Point, 5-0, Saturday in the Suffolk Class A tournament in Wading River before a raucous crowd of more than 700 that rimmed the field.

O’Neill’s hit lifts West Islip in 11 innings

In an elimination game that seemingly would not end, No. 2 West Islip beat No. 7 Hauppauge, 4-3, and earned a berth in the Suffolk Class AA semifinals against No. 3 Smithtown East.

Gargiulo, the Colts’ leadoff batter, was the caboose in the hit train, belting a two-run tie-breaking triple high off the fence in rightfield in the bottom of the sixth, in No. 2 Calhoun’s a 10-7 victory over No. 7 Mepham Monday in the opener of a Nassau AA three-game playoff series.

Hudzik’s three scoreless innings lead Ward Melville

The outcome of this one was left in the hands of the relief pitching of both schools. Ward Melville junior Matt Hudzik fired three scoreless innings as No. 6 Ward Melville edged No. 11 Hills West 5-4 in the Suffolk AA playoffs.

After he saw Miller Place’s Tyler Schrimpf get a good rip at a first-pitch fastball with two outs and two on in the top of the seventh, Kessler went to his slider for the next two pitches. The result was his 12th strikeout and a 2-1 victory for host Mount Sinai in the opener of a key three-game series in Suffolk VII. The Mustangs are 11-5; the Panthers are 10-6.

The Calhoun lefthander’s pickoff move has become a weapon, and it was on display Thursday. Gargiulo picked off two of the five batters to reach base against him in the Colts’ 7-3 win over Valley Stream Central at Cantiague Park. Gargiulo also struck out eight, walked none and scattered five hits in seven innings as first-place Calhoun improved to 9-2 in Nassau AA-III.

Second Nassau Hall of Fame class named

Announced at a press conference Tuesday morning in Mineola, the Class of 2016 includes 11 athletes, eight coaches, six administrators, four officials and two contributors. They will be formally inducted on Sept. 28 in a ceremony at the Crest Hollow Country Club and join the 23 in last year’s inaugural class.

The Cougars scored two runs on the play and two more in the inning to defeat Chaminade, 4-0, at Cantiague Park in Hicksville in a CHSAA matchup Friday.

Catapano, Filardo lead home run-happy Carey

Anthony Catapano, who drilled a solo shot to center in the first, delivered another three-run blast later in the inning. It was Carey’s fourth homer of the day — T.J. Toscano belted a solo shot in the second — and chased Jericho starter David Marmann, his team facing an 11-2 hole.

Bay Shore pitcher Fanduiz beats Northport

The day belonged to Fanduiz and the Bay Shore offense. Fanduiz cruised through the first six innings, striking out nine, for the Marauders, who built a 6-1 lead and held on for a 6-3 road win. He struck out the side in the third and at one point fanned five of seven batters.

The 2016 season will go down as his only varsity baseball campaign, and he already has made up for lost time. DiLorenzo went 2-for-5 with an RBI triple Monday afternoon in his team’s Nassau AA-I opener, a 9-4 victory at Massapequa.
