Hicksville, NY – While the New York Giants came into Super Bowl Sunday looking for a win. So did Holy Trinity.

The Lady Titans sitting at 7-1 in the CHSAA matched up very evenly with the Sacred Heart Lady Spartans, but in the end, behind the efforts of Alyson Brennan and Katie Poppe, Holy Trinity was able to pull off the 44-40 comeback victory over Sacred Heart.

Brennan scored a team-high 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Poppe contributed 16 points, including her 1,000th point at Holy Trinity.

It was a slow start for the Lady Spartans as they were outscored in the first quarter 12-9 with their leading scorer unable to get into the box score. However, the squad hailing from Hicksville didn’t fret because they turned to their second leading-scorer Alyson Brennan for the offense.

“Well we’re probably the slowest starting team I’ve ever played for” says the senior forward. “We’re kind of used to fighting from behind a lot and we needed the right people to step up at the right time.”

    ‘Right people’ was dead on.

Brennan totaled 10 points in the first half to lead the way, including a pair of free thows at the end of the first half that gave her team a three-point advantage heading into the second half.

A major reason for the tight score was due to the Sacred Heart defense that was able to keep Poppe in check for most of the first half.

“From the tap they were pretty much all over me” Poppe says about about the Lady Spartans defense. “Nina Corcoran played amazing defense and she didn’t give me a moment to breathe.”

Poppe was limited to just two made baskets in the first half, although one of those was a three pointer and one that the Boston University bound senior was able to complete the rare four-point play.

The second half though was much like the first, in which this hotly contested game was destined for a late drama filled ending.

Sacred Heart dominated the third quarter in outscoring Trinity 9-2, and expanding their lead to 27-22 going into the final frame of play.

Though the offense and really started to come alive as the Lady Titans nearly doubled the output of the first three quarters in the fourth quarter alone. Holy Trinity scored 19 points in a major offense onslaught, but each time they would score a bucket, Sacred Heart would return the favor.

However, in the deciding minutes Holy Trinity Head Coach John Scalfaro put the ball in the hands of his big-time scorer, Katie Poppe. Poppe was able to eclipse the 1,000th point mark at the school with a jumper that tied the ballgame at 40. Then in the next possession it was Brennan with a bucket that put the Titans up for good.

Although at merely a two-point game, Sacred Heart still had an opportunity. Twenty seconds to go in the game, Sacred Heart’s senior guard Kyle Carey went for the tie, but was unable to get it to go. The rebound deflected to who? None other than the capable hands of Poppe. Two free throws ensured the win, as Holy Trinity was able to escape with the 44-40 victory.

The win for the Lady Titans keeps pace with St. Anthony’s in second place in the CHSAA behind first place St. Anthony’s at 8-1 and 14-3 overall. In the loss senior forward Becky Conto led the way with 17 points for Sacred Heart.
