Garden City scored a huge victory Saturday, beating the No. 1 boys lacrosse team in the nation.

The Trojans, ranked fifth nationally by insidelacrosse.com, fought off two late rallies to beat No. 1 Conestoga (Berwyn, Pa.), 12-11, at a tournament in Haverford, Pa.

Devin Dwyer had three goals and six assists, Justin Guterding had three goals and two assists and Liam Kennedy two goals and an assist, combining for 17 points, as Garden City remained undefeated (7-0) and handed Conestoga its first loss (7-1).

"We play a very challenging non-league schedule," Garden City coach Steve Finnell said. "It happened to be that they [were no. 1] at this time but our goal is to win the conference and the county, so to have teams like this on our schedule will hopefully get us ready for the playoffs in Nassau County."

The game was tied at 7 at halftime, but Garden City controlled the third quarter to go ahead 10-7. Conestoga scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to make it 10-9, but Garden City scored the next two to again go up by three at 12-9.

Conestoga later cut the lead to one again at 12-11, but a strong effort from defensemen Scott D'Antonio, Ed Blatz, and Eugene Berkery forced a turnover with a minute left to secure the win.

"Conestoga's attack is as good as you're going to see, so I thought our three defensemen did a great job trying to contain a great group," Finnell said.

Finnell also praised Dwyer for his leadership offensively.

"[Dwyer] played incredible against one of the more talented teams in the country," Finnell said. "He distributes the ball very well and helps the guys around him, and that was pretty evident today. He did an awesome job and he made great decisions with the ball and found guys for some great transition goals."
