Ginyard, Abbondola pace SJB over C. Moriches
After a thrilling run in the spring of 2012, St. John the Baptist has kept its good vibes rolling.
Tavon Ginyard scored 18 points, while Vincent Abbondola added 16 as St. John the Baptist topped Center Moriches 61-46 to win the Fred Williams tournament consolation round.
The Cougars, which finished last season 4-20 overall and emerged NSCHSAA champions in a Cinderella run started strong in the first half, jumping out to a 29-17 lead over the defending Long Island Class B champions thanks to three first-quarter three-pointer by Abbondola.
The lead in a half which was marred by numerous turnovers was not met kindly by the Cougars head boss.
"We were trying to get our football out of our system," said St. John the Bpatist head coach Andre Edwards. "We were trying to get them in rhythm and trying to get them on board, and that's to play defense."
Edwards was also looking to get the most out of his defending championship team against some tough competition.
"You gotta play against the good teams to see how good you can be later on. that's why we scheduled a tough non league schedule,...because we want a championship-ready team."
Junior center Kyle Williams, whose breakout performance in the NSCHSAA title game yielded 34 points and 32 rebounds last year, also had eight points and added ten blocks for the Cougars on Thursday..
A'Kyse Brown had 15 points for Center Moriches, while Terrell Jackson potted 14 in the loss.
