Holy Trinity's Poppe scores 1,500th point
Holy Trinity senior Katie Poppe scored her 1,500th career point on Tuesday night. Poppe scored 14 points, reaching the milestone on a free throw late in the third quarter, and added 11 rebounds and 10 assists for No. 2 Holy Trinity in a 57-35 win over No. 7 Our Lady of Mercy in a CHSAA girls basketball quarterfinal.
"I set a goal for myself after I reached 1,000 last year that I wanted to get 1,500," Poppe said. "I wanted to set myself apart in a way . . . The milestones are just a plus because my team is in second place. To me that means the most. That means a lot more than the personal accomplishments."
Poppe has 1,506 points, 1,112 coming in three years with the Titans and 394 points in two seasons at Garden City. The Boston University-bound guard is averaging 19.6 points and has made 52 three-pointers, which rank ninth and seventh, respectively, on Long Island this season.
Holy Trinity (18-7) faces No. 3 St. John the Baptist (16-9) in a semifinal at 6:45 Friday night at St. Dominic. The teams split their regular-season meetings with SJB winning the second meeting, 53-46, on Feb. 17.
"I think we're pretty matched with them talent-wise and I think it's going to be the team that does the little things that wins," Poppe said. "And I'm hoping it's us."
