JERICHO, NY -- It may have been senior night at Jericho High School, but it was a junior that stole the spotlight.

Jericho junior Garrett Johnson scored 26 points, 20 of them coming in the second half as the Jayhawks rallied past Roslyn, 53-45 in front of a capacity crowd on Senior Night.

With the victory, Jericho (11-5 overall, 7-2 conf.) assured itself of a second place finish in Conference A-I.

With only six points in the first sixteen minutes of his game and his team trailing by just as many, Johnson knew he had to take over.

“We just had to take the game to them and execute our plays,” the star junior said following the game. “We ended up pulling out the win.”

Jericho trailed all game, but the super junior made sure the Jayhawks were trailing no longer. Johnson ended up draining three shots from beyond the three-point arc for nine points in the third quarter to bring the Jayhawks within one.

That deficit would be no more as the final frame began as Jordan Brett’s bucket gave Jericho its first lead of the game.

After Roslyn regained the lead early on, Johnson took over once again, scoring 11 of Jericho’s next 12 points as the Jayhawks sealed the victory with a 12-2 run to close out the game.

The Jayhawks also established a much faster pace to the game in order to cut the deficit slowly but surely.

“It was tiring,” said senior Leo Weiner. “We never stopped working and we played as hard as we can.”

However in the end it was Weiner and his fellow seniors that celebrated the win over its league rival.

“This game was the most important game we had so far.”
