Live game primer: Hempstead at Bay Shore
Basketball is back on Long Island.
The tip-off to MSGVarsity.com Live Access’ coverage of Long Island boys basketball begins as a Hempstead travels east to Bay Shore for an early season non-league matchup.
Hempstead’s season a year ago was successful as they went 6-6 in Conference AA-I and 9-8 overall to make it to the Class AA playoffs. Seeded as the No. 10 team, the Tigers faced No. 7 Great Neck South in the first round. Tidell Pierre and Steven Gray had 16 and 12 points respectively to lead the Tigers. However, down 45-43 with 2:35 left, Jay Lee hit a three-pointer to put Great Neck South ahead by one. Mitchell Finkel then went five-for-six from the free throw line in the final two minutes to lead the Rebels over Hempstead.
Bay Shore looks to improve on a solid 2011-12 season. The Marauders went 9-5 in League II and 11-9 overall while qualifying for the playoffs. In the playoffs, the No. 11-ranked Marauders met up with six-seeded Brentwood Indians in the first round. Gerrel Irvin netted 15 points while Tisean Wright chipped in with nine, but it was not enough as Brentwood topped Bay Shore, 62-41, ending the Marauders season.
Be sure to head back to MSGVarsity.com at 6:00 p.m. where Kevin Brown will be on the call live at Bay Shore High School. The game will re-air on MSG Varsity Channel 14 on iO on Friday, December 7, at 4:00 p.m.
