    Moscatiello thrives in Hamptons league

    The St. Thomas Aquinas College rising sophomore spent the summer playing for the North Fork Ospreys of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, which has some of the country's top collegiate talent. As of Wednesday, he was 5-2 with a 1.25 ERA in 43.0 innings and leads the league with 50 strikeouts.

    Family, ex-coach revel in Matz mania

    After Matz's stellar all-around performance in the Mets' 7-2 win over the Reds -- he allowed two earned runs, five hits and three walks while striking out six in 7 2/3 innings, and went 3-for-3 with four RBIs -- many were ready to crown the Stony Brook native the new king of New York, or at least the new king of Long Island. Yet you still would probably walk unknowingly past him down the sidewalk, said Lou Petrucci, Matz's high school baseball coach at Ward Melville.

    LI's Fanti agrees to terms with Phillies

    Hauppauge lefthander Nick Fanti, selected in the 31st round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft in early June, has agreed to terms with the Phillies on a minor-league contract. He called it "a dream come true.''

    Smithtown Christian's title was a family affair

    Smithtown Christian defeated Westfield, 8-4, on June 13 for its second straight state title. Before that game, as every other time they took the field this season and last, the Knights chanted, "One, two, three, family!''

    Mattituck's title a party for entire community

    The town understood the significance of what transpired several hours earlier, about 250 miles northwest in Binghamton. The Tuckers of Class B had beaten Livonia, 4-1, for their first state championship.

    East Meadow's Kavanagh a two-sport all-star

    No other Long Islander earned a spot in both the Grand Slam Challenge and Empire Challenge. The East Meadow senior, who will play baseball at LIU Post, went 1-for-2 with a single and stolen base Monday in Nassau's 3-1 win over Suffolk in the Grand Slam Challenge. Tuesday night he lined up at cornerback for the Long Island all-stars against New York City in the Empire Challenge at Hofstra University.

    Nassau announces first Hall of Fame class

    The 28-person class, which represents 23 high schools and includes athletes, coaches, administrators, contributors and officials, will officially be inducted at a ceremony at the Crest Hollow County Club on Sept. 30.

    Bianco's two-run single lifts Nassau All-Stars

    Bianco's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and sent the Nassau All-Stars to a 3-1 win over the Suffolk All-Stars in the 11th Grand Slam Challenge before 550 fans at Farmingdale State College.

    South Side's Misiaszek wins Diamond Award

    Special may be an understatement as Misiaszek went 5-1 as a senior this season with 93 strikeouts and five walks in 441/3 innings. He finished the regular season with an 0.67 ERA and 0.60 WHIP, and won the Diamond Award as the best pitcher in Nassau County Wednesday night at the Nassau baseball dinner at the Uniondale Marriott. He was a finalist for the award last season.

    Diamond Awards for Calandra, Papa

    Papa, an All-Long Island pitcher, was trying to get out Calandra, a Ryan T. Caulfield winner as the top catcher in Nassau. Calandra remembers thinking "his knuckle drop is one of the filthiest pitches I've ever seen in my life. It's unbelievable how he throws it for strikes."

    MSG Varsity announced its All-Metro Teams for baseball, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse this week. Congratulations to all the players who made the most prestigious all star teams in the Tri-State!

    Smithtown Christian takes 'D' state title again

    Smithtown Christian delivered that message loud and clear Saturday, beating Westfield, 8-4, for the program's second straight state Class D baseball title.

    Southold loses semifinal heartbreaker

    Schaghticoke Hoosic Valley turned two 10th-inning errors by Southold into two runs in its 2-0 win in a Class C semifinal at Binghamton University yesterday. Senior Alex Poliwoda, who went 9 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs, seven hits and two walks with one strikeout, was charged with the loss. But that doesn't speak to his performance.

    Division's season ends with 10th-inning jolt

    Jacob Stuckelman doubled down the leftfield line in the bottom of the 10th inning as New Castle Byram Hills ended Division's season with a 4-3 walk-off victory in the Class A state baseball semifinals Saturday.

    Mattituck advances to Class B baseball title game

    The Tuckers beat Ogdensburg Free Academy 7-2 in the Class B semifinals Saturday and were scheduled play the Westhill/Livonia semifinal winner for the crown at 4 p.m.

    Smithtown Christian advances in state baseball

    The Knights beat previously undefeated Fort Ann, 6-4, in a semifinal game Saturday at MacArthur Park. They play the winner of the Oriskany-Westfield semifinal for the championship Saturday at 4 p.m.

    Mattituck captures Class B baseball title

    Jon Dwyer was doing backflips at the end of Mattituck's run to the state Class B baseball championship. The second baseman was celebrating with the rest of the Tuckers after they beat Livonia, 4-1, to capture the title at Broome Community College Saturday.

    Connetquot falls in state semis

    The Thunderbirds squandered a two-run fifth-inning lead and fell to Mamaroneck, 4-2, Saturday in the state Class AA semifinal round at Union-Endicott High School. Mamaroneck scored two unearned runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings to pull out the win.

    Hauppauge's Fanti wins Yastrzemski Award

    Fanti, a 6-3, 190-pound dual threat on the mound and at the plate, earned the Yaz Award with one of the finest statistical seasons in Suffolk history.

    Ward Melville's Flynn wins Gibson Award

    The 6-2, 200-pound Flynn, who had one of the finest careers in Suffolk baseball history, struck out 73 in 521/3 innings and had an ERA of 1.07. He allowed 32 hits and walked 21.

    Connetquot's Gagliano wins Silver Slugger Award

    Gagliano, who led Suffolk with a .565 batting average, drove in 34 runs and scored 31 runs this season. He drove in an incredible 23 runs with two-out hits.

    Robinson heads list of LIers taken in MLB draft

    Alex Robinson, taken in the fifth round by the Twins, was the highest MLB draft pick out of Long Island in 2015. The Holy Trinity and University of Maryland product went 140th overall.

    Walker, Monaco win Butch Dellecave Award

    Perivolaris' two-hitter gives Mattituck LI 'B' title

    Senior righthander Marcos Perivolaris allowed two hits and two walks as Mattituck shut out Oyster Bay, 5-0, to win the Long Island Class B title at the Dowling College Athletic Complex in Shirley.

    Dwyer brothers' 10th-inning hits lift Mattituck

    Those two hits propelled Mattituck to a 9-5 win that sends the 25-1 Tuckers to the state semifinals for the first time since 1983, according to Newsday records.

    Miscues, walks doom Tuckahoe in baseball regionals

    The Tigers squandered an early 3-0 lead to Long Island champion Southold and were beaten in the Class C regional final

    Papa pitches Division to LI 'A' title

    Division defeated Bayport-Blue Point, 4-0, to win the L.I. title game at the New York Institute of Technology. It's the Blue Dragons' first Long Island championship victory since 2011.

    Southold baseball reaches state Final Four

    Southold fell behind 3-0 after the first inning, but Poliwoda settled into a nice groove for the First Settlers in their 8-5 win Saturday over Tuckahoe at Mamaroneck High School.

    Connetquot wins LI Class AA baseball title

    It was the fourth Long Island title for Connetquot, which won it in 1986, 1989 and 1995, and the third time Connetquot beat MacArthur in the L.I. title game. The T-Birds (24-4) will face Mamaroneck in a state semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday in Binghamton.

    Conklin's dramatics not enough for Albertus

    Chris Conklin belted a game-tying home run in the seventh before the Falcons were beaten by Matticuk 9-5 in 10 innings
