    Jamel Allen led the board brigade with a career-high 22 as Brentwood — helped by a 27-point second quarter that blew open a relatively close game — cruised to a 71-36 victory over host Longwood in Suffolk I boys basketball. The two-time defending Long Island champion Indians improved to 2-0 and the Lions fell to 1-1.

    Altenord, a 6-4 point guard, had 22 points and five assists and made the key basket late as host Half Hollow Hills West pulled away from Deer Park, 67-58, on Thursday in a duel of Suffolk IV favorites. The Colts are 2-0; the Falcons fell to 1-1.

    With Smithtown West trailing 48-47 early in overtime, junior Kyle LaGuardia pulled down an offensive rebound in traffic, then drew the and-one — and banked in the free throw.

    Brentwood’s Almonacy, Allen on a mission

    Almonacy and fellow senior Allen, a 6-6 center drawing Division I interest as a forward from several schools, are the only starters left from Brentwood’s last two Long Island championship teams that fell short of a state Class AA title.

    Gatling is a 6-2 senior guard and the only third-year varsity player on a team aiming for its second consecutive Nassau Class AA title. He is the only returning starter from the team that lost to Brentwood in the 2015 Long Island championship.

    Brentwood teammates and returning Newsday All-Long Island first-team selections Mike Almonacy and Jamel Allen headline the Suffolk County boys team that will face Nassau County in the 6th Alzheimer's All-Star Basketball Classic on Saturday at Brentwood High School.

    Greenwood, Fiedler among 28 Nassau HOF inductees

    Greenwood was one of the 28 inductees, ranging from athletes to coaches to administrators, in the inaugural class.     Petrie, 82, died last Sunday in East Hampton of a sudden illness, leaving behind an enviable basketball legacy. He won more games than any public school coach in New York State history. Petrie won 20 league championships, three Suffolk County crowns and two New York State titles. He is a member of both the Suffolk County and New York State sports halls of fame.

    Brentwood's Almonacy to play for Stony Brook

    Michael Almonacy, a junior guard for two-time Long Island Class AA champion Brentwood and Newsday's boys basketball Suffolk Player of the Year, verbally committed to Stony Brook on Wednesday night.

    In his final game for the Phantoms, Darby connected on three three-pointers and scored 13 points. He bemoaned the fact that it was the last "real game" he would play with his brother Mike, a sophomore. Doug Niblock also had 13 points with three three-pointers, and Jack Alliegro added 12 as Bayport-Blue Point completed one of the greatest seasons in school history.

    Lamison, Manning Jr. lead Killer Bees to Final Four

    Josh Lamison, whose uncle played on the 1996 state championship team, had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Charles Manning Jr., whose father played on the Killer Bees' 1998 state champion, added 21 points and 10 rebounds as Bridgehampton routed Livingston Manor, 60-39, to win the state Southeast Regional Class D championship game at Suffolk CC-Selden.

    Brentwood beats Baldwin for second straight LIC

    The Indians beat Baldwin, 72-51, with gritty defense and flashy offense, sharing the ball and wowing a near capacity crowd at Farmingdale State Saturday to win a second consecutive Long Island Class AA title.

    Work ethic the key for Baldwin's Rodwell

    It was that kind of work ethic that enabled Rodwell to lead Long Island in three-pointers this season with 75, according to stats compiled by Newsday.

    Not only were Johnson's 23 points not enough to earn Southampton a trip to Glens Falls for the state Class B Final Four, but it was the final basketball game the rugged 6-3 senior would play with his brother Israel, a 6-1 junior who scored 15 points in the Mariners' 68-58 loss to Woodlands in the state Southeast Regional Class B final played at Farmingdale State.

    Johnson scored 26 points, had six assists and made four steals in a 78-48 victory over Malverne Tuesday night in the Class B Long Island championship game at LIU Post. It was the Mariners' second consecutive Long Island title.

    Brentwood wins Suffolk Class AA title

    Allen set an early tone with 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter and Mableton scored 18 as Brentwood defeated Half Hollow Hills West, 80-60, Monday night before more than 2,000 fans at Farmingdale State for the Suffolk Class AA (large schools) championship.

    Hills West looks to bright future

    Altenord is a junior forward. Kian Dalyrimple is a junior guard. Deven Williams also is a junior guard. Cameron Jordan is a sophomore forward. These four returning starters are big reasons, along with a young bench, why coach Bill Mitaritonna won't argue with Altenord's assessment.

    BBP falls, but Phantoms alive for big prize

    The safety net for the Phantoms, and the reason they weren't overly dejected, is that they remain alive for the big prize: They will play the Nassau Class A champion, either Valley Stream South or Floral Park, for the Long Island championship at 2:30 p.m. on March 14 at Farmingdale State. The winner earns a trip to Glens Falls, and Darby knows just how special that can be.

    It's far from an insult and Elisias said he certainly isn't offended. Many who have seen Elisias play this season have marveled at his size and ability to rebound and block shots. Monster, they say without hesitation, is the best way to describe him. Giant, colossal and imposing also apply.
