    Sandberg said he took a break from the gridiron last year to play ice hockey - a sport he since has quit - and varsity baseball, where he was a pitcher and shortstop. But football was something he said he needed to play during his final year.

    Timing comes naturally for Clarke RB, drummer Dawson

    Dawson, a senior, rushed for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns last season for his Nassau Conference IV team. He is a returning All-County player and has been on varsity since getting called up for the playoffs as a freshman.

    Locust Valley focused on title run

    Matthaei, Pedranghelu and a deep senior class got a taste of Nassau football's biggest stage last year: Hofstra's James M. Shuart Stadium. But their comeback in the Conference IV semifinals came up short, and they lost to Mineola, 16-13.

    Welcome to MSGVarsity.com’s Memorable Mondays, a summer-long series that looks back on the top players, games and moments from the past season and gazes ahead to 2015-16. As the summer goes on, we’ll compile the lists and them post here. New lists will be posted every Monday at 3 p.m. In Week 2 of Memorable Mondays, we look back at the top five individual performances from 2014-15 on Long Island.

    Cutinella named winner of Marcus A. Henry Award

    It is those special qualities that make Thomas Cutinella the recipient of the award that honors Henry, a man who not only loved sports but was a community leader, family man and dedicated journalist. Henry died April 1, 2014.

    Sarra: Blieberg is Empire Challenge's unsung hero

    Blieberg is the senior game coordinator for the matchup of Long Island's senior football all-stars against their counterparts from New York City. It's a full-time job, and he loves it.

    Daniggelis, Long Island up to the Challenge

    Daniggelis threw for 121 yards and a touchdown, ran for 66 yards and a score, earned game MVP honors and led Long Island to a 34-27 win over New York City in front of a crowd of 9,268 at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

    East Meadow's Kavanagh a two-sport all-star

    No other Long Islander earned a spot in both the Grand Slam Challenge and Empire Challenge. The East Meadow senior, who will play baseball at LIU Post, went 1-for-2 with a single and stolen base Monday in Nassau's 3-1 win over Suffolk in the Grand Slam Challenge. Tuesday night he lined up at cornerback for the Long Island all-stars against New York City in the Empire Challenge at Hofstra University.

    Nassau announces first Hall of Fame class

    The 28-person class, which represents 23 high schools and includes athletes, coaches, administrators, contributors and officials, will officially be inducted at a ceremony at the Crest Hollow County Club on Sept. 30.

    Colasurdo's career culminated Wednesday night with the Piner Award, selected by the coaches and given annually to the best linebacker in Nassau.

    Carey repeats as Rutgers Cup winner

    Carey received 139 points, including 38 first-place votes, from the coaches. (A vote for first is worth three points, second is worth two and third is one.) Lawrence, the Long Island Class III champion, finished second with 101 points. Syosset, the Long Island Class I champ, was third with 51 points and Roosevelt, the Conference IV winner, received 15 votes.

    Lawrence's Fredericks wins Thorp Award

    Fredericks led Lawrence to four consecutive Nassau Conference III titles. For his efforts, he earned the 73rd annual Tom Thorp Award, presented to Nassau's top football player, Wednesday night at the Nassau County Football Coaches Association banquet in Woodbury.

    Long Beach's Campbell wins Martone Award

    For his two-way prowess, Campbell was awarded the 40th Martone Award as the outstanding interior lineman in Nassau County at Wednesday night's annual Nassau County Coaches Association banquet in Woodbury.

    The Suffolk County Football Coaches Association handed out its yearly awards at a banquet at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge Monday night. Among the honors were the 12th Man Award, the Esiason Quarterback Award, the Cassese Defensive Back Award and the NFF Receiver Award.

    Longwood's Weiss wins Zellner Award

    The Longwood junior anchored both lines for his football team, paving the way for an unstoppable rushing attack that carried the Lions to the Suffolk I semifinals. Those accomplishments earned Weiss the Zellner Award, presented Monday night to the top lineman in the county. He is the second Longwood player to receive the honor, joining Darius Greene in 2011.

    The two-way starter rushed for 1,948 yards and 28 touchdowns as Longwood finished the Suffolk Division I regular season with an 8-0 record and earned the top seed in the postseason. For his efforts, White earned the 55th annual Carl A. Hansen Award, presented to Suffolk's top football player, Monday night at the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association banquet at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge.

    Harley-Rey wins Tom Cutinella Memorial Leadership Award

    Harley-Rey, a senior, started at middle linebacker and fullback for the Wildcats, who finished 12-0 and won the school's first county and Long Island championships in football. Being a two-way starter for a Suffolk public school was only part of the criteria for the award that honors Cutinella, a junior starting guard/linebacker who died after a collision during a game on Oct. 1. Leadership, character and academics -- traits that Cutinella embodied -- also are required.

    Deer Park's Thompson wins Burnett Award

    As a running back, Thompson had 1,624 yards and 19 touchdowns on 172 carries. But it was his prowess on the other side of the football that earned him the prestigious Burnett Award. He was an exceptional run-stopper and had so much speed that he easily could cover running backs in space. As a middle linebacker/defensive end, he had 76 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles.

    A season that nearly ended following the death of Tom Cutinella, a junior who died after a on-field collision in a game against John Glenn on Oct. 1, ended in glory as the Wildcats rallied to beat the Rough Riders, 47-13, at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium Sunday afternoon.

    The coaching seeds were planted in the den at the Cipp home on Beaver Dam Road, adjacent to Bellport High School. That's where Joe Cipp's two sons not only watched cartoons on TV as kids but viewed the flickering images of old film every Sunday and learned that part of their father's success as a high school football coach was built on reviewing game films. Over and over again.

    The pressure on Riverhead quarterback Ken Simco came from all sides. There was nowhere to run. The Half Hollow Hills West defense recorded eight sacks and forced three turnovers Saturday in a 28-13 win in a Suffolk Division II semifinal playoff game before a crowd of 800 in Dix Hills.

    Hannigan helps East Islip upset Bellport

    Jack Hannigan ran for 307 yards on 36 carries with three touchdowns Saturday in leading East Islip into the county final for the 20th time. But it was his one touchdown pass that almost defied description.
