    Chris Mauriello became the fourth wrestler in Suffolk’s 60-year history to win six straight league titles. The Hauppauge senior won by injury default at 1 minute, 10 seconds of the first period in his bout against Westhampton’s Scott Rementer at 152 pounds.

    In Wantagh’s 54-18 win over Hewlett Friday night, the fruits of both wrestler’s efforts in practice were exposed. Vines pinned Robert Levitz in 1:19, and Killard got his pin of Eddie O’Toole in 3:33.

    Rivera’s pin propels Long Beach to II-A title

    His opening match fall in 59 seconds over MacArthur’s Joe Razza at 220 opened a dominant performance for the Marines as they defeated the Generals 63-13 to clinch the Nassau II-A wrestling title. Rivera secured a takedown early in the round and eventually worked his way into the pin.

    Zabbara's reversal sparks No. 13 Rocky Point

    Dylan Zabbara earned a reversal, and two points, to seize a late-match victory and spark Rocky Point, ranked No. 13 in the Tri-State, to a 45-26 victory over Hauppauge on Wednesday night.

    Hewlett’s Lucas Pincus went 4-0 in the 138-pound class en route to being named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Ted Petersen Memorial Tournament yesterday, and those around the sport knew that this type of performance was coming.

    Teemer already wrestling at peak form

    The Long Beach sophomore had a standout performance Wednesday at the Massapequa Holiday Tournament, winning the 126-pound bracket and earning most outstanding wrestler honors after an 8-2 win over Ben Tepperman of Hauppauge.

    O’Hara leads Sachem East in Davidson Duals

    O’Hara went 6-1 for the two-day tournament in the 106-pound weight class, only losing against defending state champion Adam Busiello of Eastport-South Manor. He defeated Islip’s Chris Delisle in a 6-4 decision, Farmingdale’s Joseph Simons with a fall in 5:49, Deer Park’s Edon Burani with a fall in 1:53, MacArthur’s Benjamin Rosen with a 2:24 fall, Selg in the 6-2 decision and Mansa in a 2-0 decision. He fell in 1:33 against Busiello.

    Wantagh’s Justin Vines quite a mat rat

    Vines’ hours of training were put to good use during his takedown of Sachem North’s Eddie Galante with 46 seconds remaining in the second period in the final of the Warriors’ 70-7 win over the Flaming Arrows on Saturday. That match punctuated the 16th David Bloom Memorial Tournament.

    Gregor Malkasian’s pin leads Connetquot

    That opening came in the third round when Malkasian grabbed Hunter with a headlock and pulled him down to the mat for the pin in Connetquot’s 51-29 victory over MacArthur in the final of Saturday’s fourth annual Terry Haise Invitational tournament at Freeport High School. The gym erupted in excitement as Malkasian made his way to the side of the mat to celebrate with his teammates.

    JFK’s Pappas states his goal

    Pappas, a junior from Plainview JFK, is one of the top lightweight wrestlers on Long Island and has a wealth of experience as a two-time state finalist at 106 and 120 pounds. All that’s missing from his awards collection is a state title.

    Massapequa teammates inspire Bran-Umana

    For Bran-Umana, it’s been an underdog story from the time he joined the team as a freshman. Coach Ron Serrano saw him playing basketball in gym class that year and immediately recognized Bran-Umana’s skill set. His footwork and athleticism would no doubt translate well to the wrestling mat.

    The Syosset sophomore won his second state championship Saturday night with an 11-6 win over East Islip's Jesse Dellavecchia before a crowd of more than 5,500 at Times Union Center.

    Dusold falls in rematch of 2014 title bout

    Dusold beat Logan Robinson (Walton) and Luke Yankloski (Wayne) by decisions of 5-2 and 3-2, respectively, before his loss to Spann.

    Casella wins 132-pound state title

    Before his 2-1 decision over Cody McGregor (Tonawanda) in the title match of the 53rd state wrestling tournament at Times Union Center Saturday, the 132-pounder from Locust Valley could hardly contain his intent for the championship bout.

    Rocky Point's Dutton wins his first state title

    Dutton, Long Island's all-time winningest wrestler, beat Michael Raccioppi of Minisink Valley, 10-2, in the 145-pound final before a crowd of more than 5,500 at Times Union Center. Dutton gained a takedown on a crushing bear hug and used a reinforced arm bar for a 5-0 first-period lead.

    8th grader Busiello wins state wrestling title

    Busiello became Suffolk's first state wrestling champion as an eighth grader when he routed Benny Baker of Newark Valley, 11-1, Saturday. Busiello, who was a state runner-up as a seventh-grader, hit a neat duck under three seconds into the bout and controlled the action throughout.

    DeVincenzo rebounds, takes third place at states

    Not long after, DeVincenzo refocused. He was back stretching and running short laps in preparation to make a run at third place in the consolation bracket. With a pin of Lyndonville's Tony Recco, a state champ in 2012, in 4:49 and a 7-4 decision of Logan Robinson (Walton), DeVincenzo hit his new goal.

    Arceri wins state title in third try

    Arceri of Huntington High escaped in the second overtime and rode out Jay Albis of East Fishkill John Jay for the final 30 seconds to capture his first state title Saturday night at Times Union Center.

    Piccininni fulfills destiny with 4th state title

    In workmanlike fashion, Ward Melville's Piccininni edged St. Anthony's senior Ben Lamantia, 3-1, to claim the 126-pound championship and finished the season 42-2. Now Piccininni and Jantzen are the only two Long Island wrestlers who have won four state championships.

    Deer Park, Garden City wrestlers vie for state titles

    But Saturday at the 53rd state wrestling championship, his Falcons will have a chance to shine on the big stage as David Hamil (182) and Tommy Cox (106) each advanced to the semifinals at Times Union Center. They'll be wrestling for Deer Park's first individual state titles since Angelo Zegarelli in 1995.

    Wantagh's Quinn climbs back to third at states

    Although his 2015 state title hopes came up short after a 4-2 semifinal loss to Jay Albis of John Jay East Fishkill, Quinn, the top seed at 113 pounds, was able to move on and put forth a dominating performance in the consolation bracket. Quinn, a senior, pinned Half Hollow Hills East’s Phil Spadaforda in 2:49 and defeated Rocky Point's Anthony Cirillo by technical fall for third place in the state.

    LIers rise to top at D-II state wrestling meet

    Top-seeded DeVincenzo won by a technical fall over Joe Rorick (Odessa-Montour) in 6:00 and No. 2 Dusold won a 3-2 decision over Luke Yankloski (Wayne), both in the quarterfinals of the 53rd state wrestling tournament at Times Union Center.

    Can Islip's Wade join brothers as state champ?

    Wade says success in his house can be measured by state titles. His three brothers were all state champions. Chris won in 2005, Lance in 2007 as a wild-card entrant and Kyle in 2011.

    Rakitsis leads host of LI wrestlers to semifinals

    Rakitsis won on a second period pin Friday and then thrilled the capacity crowd of more than 4,000 with a 5-3 win in sudden victory over second-seeded Chris Goudy of Queensbury in a Division I 195-pound quarterfinal round. Rakitsis' big takedown in overtime enabled him to move into Saturday's semifinal against Nick McShea of Monroe-Woodbury at Times Union Center.

    "Maybe it was a little surprising to get two champs, but I was not surprised by the success of either of these guys," he said. "They both put in the work year in and year out, especially in the offseason. I knew they were going to be successful, just not exactly how successful."

    Kelly, who won CHSAA states last year at 99 pounds, was named most outstanding wrestler while helping St. Anthony's to a league title at Kellenberg. The Friars finished with 409.5 points. Chaminade took second with 355, and Kellenberg was third with 316.5.

    Sarra: Suffolk to honor former wrestling ref

    Ken Cellan, who officiated wrestling for 50 years, including 49 appearances in the Suffolk tournament from 1959-2007, died on June 1 at the age of 75.

    Rocky Point's Tom Dutton rolls to 6th league title

    Dutton pinned Mark Zaharris of Eastport-South Manor in 1:01 to capture the 145-pound Suffolk League V title Saturday night before a packed house in Islip. The win was his 41st in a row and improved his career record to 253-28.

    WM's Donnelly wins at League I meet

    Donny Donnelly of Ward Melville, who won his second consecutive League I title Saturday night at Floyd when he secured a takedown in overtime to beat Floyd's Ryan Gerena, 5-3, at 170 pounds, attested to that.

    Zagarino hit a beautiful five-point move, taking Riverhead's Raheem Brown to his back just before time expired to pull out a 10-8 title win Saturday, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The ever-so-popular sophomore, who is also a model/actor, added another storybook ending in a life that seems to break his way.

    Teemer could be LI's first 5-time state champ

    Teemer, 28-0 this season at 106 pounds with a 74-2 career varsity record, has the makings to become Long Island's first five-time state champion. Jesse Jantzen of Shoreham-Wading River is the only Long Islander to win four state titles.

    Syosset's Arujau wants four straight state titles

    The Syosset sophomore has an ambitious goal: to win four consecutive state wrestling championships. Last season's 44-0 record punctuated by a state title was the first step. Arujau believes this season he will take the second.

    Will Piccininni win a fourth straight state title?

    A three-time state champion who hasn't lost since the state finals as an eighth-grader, the Ward Melville senior is already in rarefied air as one of only five wrestlers from Long Island to win three state titles. One more would put him alongside Shoreham-Wading River's Jesse Jantzen, who won four crowns from 1997-2000.

    Ward Melville's three-time state wrestling champion announced he will grapple for Oklahoma State University next fall. Piccininni said the decision was a difficult one but after visiting the Cowboys' facilities and meeting with the coaches, he was sure he made the right choice.
