Massapequa stays perfect, sweeps Farmingdale
Massapequa sure knows its volleyball.
The Chiefs, whether it is boys or girls, have yet to lose a volleyball set all season long.
And that trend continued Wednesday evening.
Massapequa’s girls volleyball team, led by the strength of Lauren Van Buren’s 11 kills, continued its torrid start to the 2012 season by sweeping Farmingdale in a Conference 1-AA matchup, 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-19).
“Lauren’s an amazing hitter,” said junior setter Katie Vedilago. “Just to be on the same court as her is an honor. To be with all these girls is an honor and I’m so glad that we’re all together.”
The chemistry between Vedilago and Van Buren was evident right from the get-go as the junior set up the 5-foot-11 Van Buren on the first point for the kill to get Massapequa rolling.
“It’s amazing,” Van Buren said of working closely with Vedilago. “She’s always asking ‘What do you want to run?’ She just does amazing work, just like all the girls.”
The Chiefs, who are the defending 12-time Nassau County Class AA champions, scored 17 out of the next 22 points in set one as they rolled to a very convincing 25-9 win over a reeling Lady Dalers team.
The final point? You guessed it. Vedilago to Van Buren for the kill.
The second set was the same old story for Masssapequa as the Chiefs scored 17 of the set’s first 23 points as they rolled to a 25-13 win aided by two Van Buren kills and two aces by Vedilago. Farmingdale put up a fight in the third and final set despite yielding the first seven points to a streaking Vedilago service, but eventually fell to the Chiefs, 25-19.
Farmingdale, which is still looking for its first win of the season, fell to 0-6. Massapequa’s fortunes were just the opposite as they improved to a perfect 6-0.
