Miller Place crowned LI 'B' champions

Paint the town red. That town being Syracuse and red being Miller Place's team color. After a seven-year absence from the field hockey state tournament, they're coming back.
Ally Hutzler scored twice to lead the Panthers in a 3-0 win over Manhasset in the Long Island Class B final Tuesday night at Adelphi, securing the program's 14th title, but first since 2005.
At the end of a back-and-forth first half, Maggie Revera put the Panthers on the board 1:07 before intermission. Miller Place reset after the initial penalty corner shot was swatted back, and Revera took a pass inside from Allie Krumholz about 2 yards left of the cage and poked it in.
Hutzler's second-half goals created the cushion and final margin for the Panthers (19-0), who face Pittsford Sutherland in the state semifinals Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Jensen Polizzotto made 10 saves for Manhasset (14-3).
Miller Place is one of only two remaining undefeated Long Island teams, along with Class A champ Sachem East. But the Panthers went about their business quietly this season, with little flash and fanfare, just a whole lot of success.
Last night, though, they made some noise. No, really. The players, along with their fans -- several of them male students wearing the girls' alternate jerseys -- screamed at the top of their lungs.
"We've got that hardware," coach Alana LaMorte said.
And with that, a trip upstate.
