Nassau boys golf second in states after Day 1
No Annie Park? No Matt Lowe? No problem.
Despite playing without its county champion and its county runner-up, the Section VIII (Nassau) team shot a total score of 548 Sunday on the first day of the boys golf state championship at Cornell University to finish the day in second place in the team competition. Section VIII is just four strokes behind Section IX, which leads with 544.
"We have a good bunch of golfers," Section VIII coordinator Larry Rose said. "It would be nice to have Matt and Annie, but we're not gonna cry about it. We have kids who can fill those spots."
New Hyde Park freshman Chris Yeom shot a 2-over-par 74, which is good for fourth place in the individual competition. Along with Yeom, Section VIII had three other golfers in the top 20 after the first day: Cold Spring Harbor's Steve Tanen (77) and Chris Gabriele (77) and Farmingdale's Kyle Brey (79).
"The kids that are here deserve to be here," Rose said. "They're playing really well, so I'm happy."
The Section XI (Suffolk) team is in eighth place with a score of 571, led by Sayville's Kyle Burke (79).
