LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

Tuesday, June 5 (at Mitchel Field)

(N1) MacArthur 16, (S4) East Islip 2

Kristen Brown went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, including a leadoff home run to straightaway center to make it 5-1 in the second as MacArthur captured the Long Island Class AA championship at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Briana Lombardo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jena Cozza went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. It's MacArthur's second title since 1988. Brown also tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.

FINALS

(1) MacArthur 2, (2) East Meadow 1

Game 1 - MacArthur 2, East Meadow 1

Kristin Daly's RBI single in the bottom of the third scored Emily Lyons to give No. 1 MacArthur (19-3) a 2-0 lead in Game 1 of the best-of-three Nassau Class AA championship. Kristen Brown threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Jena Cozza went 2-for-4 with a double. No. 2 East Meadow is 12-8. Game 2 is Thursday at Mitchel Field at 4 p.m.

Game 2 - East Meadow, 3, MacArthur 2

Dina LaRosa scored the winning run on a safety squeeze by Claire Travis in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead East Meadow over MacArthur in Game 2 of the Class AA county championship series. Madison West hit a two-run single to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth Kerri Shapiro tossed nine innings, allowing two hits, three walks and one earned run with three strikeouts. Marisa San Antonio went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Game 3 - MacArthur 13, East Meadow 2

Kristen Brown struck out 10, walked two and scattered five hits as No. 1 MacArthur breezed by second-seeded East Meadow in the third and final game of the best-of-three Nassau Class AA Final at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Emily Lyons went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kirsten Kelley went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Kristin Daly added an RBI single in the win. MacArthur will face the winner of Longwood vs. East Islip in the Long Island Class AA championship.

 

SEMI-FINALS

Thursday, May 17 (at Mitchel Athletic Complex)

(1) MacArthur 9, (5) Long Beach 1

Kristen Brown threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts, Jena Cozza went 4-for-4 with two home runs four RBIs and Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead No. 1 MacArthur (18-3) in a Nassau Class AA semifinal. MacArthur will play No. 2 East Meadow in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship, Monday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex. No. 5 Long Beach is 12-8.

(2) East Meadow 2, (3) Massapequa 0

Kerri Shapiro threw a complete game two-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead No. 2 East Meadow (14-7) over No. 3 Massapequa in the semifinals of the Nassau Class AA Playoffs. Shapiro had a no-hitter broken up with no outs in the top of the seventh. Dina LaRosa went 1/3 with an RBI and Emma McKillop went 2/3 with an RBI. East Meadow will face No. 1 MacArthur in the finals on Monday at Mitchel Field at 4 p.m.

 

QUARTERFINALS

Monday, May 14 (at higher seed)

(1) MacArthur 10, (8) Syosset 0

Jena Cozza went 4-for-4 and hit for the cycle, Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons went 2-for-2 with two runs and Emily Lyons and Kristen Brown added back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead No. 1 MacArthur (17-3) in the Nassau Class AA quarters. Brown threw a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts MacArthur hosts No. 5 Long Beach in the semis,Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Field. No. 8 Syosset is 4-14.

(2) East Meadow 1, (7) Mepham 0

Tied at 0 in the bottom of the ninth, Claire Travis hit a lead-off single, advanced to third on a single by Emma McKillop, and then scored on a wild pitch to give No. 2 East Meadow (13-7) the win over No. 7 Mepham in the quarterfinals of the Nassau Class AA Playoffs. Kerri Shapiro pitched all nine innings with nine strikeouts and four hits allowed. East Meadow will face the winner of No. 3 Massapequa and No. 6 Carey in the semifinals on Thursday at Mitchell Field at 4 p.m.

(3) Massapequa 4, (6) Carey 1

Renee Vaiano threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and went 1-for-3 with an RBI double to lead No. 3 Massapequa (12-7) in a Nassau Class AA quarterfinal. Rachel Siever went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Alyssa Zinkoiewicz went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Massapequa visits No. 2 East Meadow in a semifinal, Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Mitchel Field. No. 6 Carey is 8-10.

(5) Long Beach 7, (4) Oceanside 4

Brianna Rivera's RBI single broke a 4-4 tie to highlight a five-run top of the seventh for No. 5 Long Beach (12-8) in the Nassau Class AA quarters. Ashley Martin threw a five-hitter with eighth strikeouts and Annie Winerip went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Long Beach will play No. 1 MacArthur in the semis, Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Field. No. 4 Oceanside is 8-10.

(5) Long Beach 3, (12) Herricks 0

Ashley Martin threw a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and two walks to lead No. 5 Long Beach (11-8) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Martin had an RBI single in the first inning to open the scoring and Caitlin O'Connell's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 3-0. Long Beach plays at No. 4 Oceanside, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 12 Herricks is 10-3.

(6) Carey 8, (11) Baldwin 1

Marcella Castellano went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Joanna Carillo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead No. 6 Carey (8-11) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Carey visits No. 3 Massapequa in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 pm. No. 11 Baldwin is 13-7.

(7) Mepham 2, (10) Plainview-JFK 0

Toni Valeriano threw a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and two walks and Nicole Pazienza went 2-for-3 to lead No. 7 Mepham (7-10) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Amanda Fucci added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Mepham visits No. 2 East Meadow in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 10 Plainview JFK is 12-4.

(8) Syosset 2, (9) Farmingdale 1

Valerie Moran's single in the bottom of the sixth scored Kayla Beovich to give No. 8 Syosset (4-13) a 2-0 lead in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Moran went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and Paula Janowsky threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts while allowing no earned runs. Syosset visits No. 1 MacArthur in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 9 Farmingdale is 13-6.
